Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all parts of the task and successfully reports the main features and comparisons. The student notes the highest figure overall (young males at 52.8%) and highlights key trends across age groups, such as the peak for females in the 45-54 age bracket (53.3%) and the convergence among the oldest cohort. However, the overview paragraph contains vague phrasing like 'highest large ratio of men' and 'same percentage' rather than clearly summarising the overarching trends. Data points are cited accurately from the chart, meeting the core requirements of Task Achievement at a Band 6.5 level.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay has a clear overall arrangement and is divided into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, overview, and two body paragraphs detailing the data. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the other hand', 'While', and 'Whereas', though some transitions feel a bit mechanical. Referencing is occasionally slightly confusing, as seen in phrases like 'The male of age 25 to 34' where singular forms are used to describe a demographic group. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but overall progression could be smoother with more varied transitional phrases.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with attempts at less common items such as 'proportion', 'participation', and 'contribution'. However, there are frequent inappropriate word choices and collocations, such as 'highest large ratio of men' and 'show a little participation'. Spelling and capitalization errors are also present, including random capitalization in the middle of sentences ('Overall, The Ratio...', 'in 2010...', 'Females'). The lexical range is sufficient to communicate the main data points, but errors in word formation and style place this at Band 5.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, using comparative clauses with 'while' and 'whereas'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, particularly with subject-verb agreement and singular/plural forms (e.g., 'The male of age 25 to 34 show...', 'young females ratio was...', 'Female show higher contribution'). Punctuation and capitalization are also inconsistent. While these errors do not completely impede communication, their frequency prevents the essay from reaching a higher band.
