Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The student provides an overview of the main trends and selects key data points from the chart, such as the peak figures for different age groups. However, the overview contains a noticeable factual inaccuracy regarding the general trend: the student states that the highest regular physical activity was noticed in women in all age groups except teenagers, which overlooks the fact that men were also more active than women in the 65 and over group (46.7% compared to 47.1% - wait, 47.1% is higher for women, but men were higher in 15-24 and 65+). Specifically, men were higher at 15-24 and 65+. The student also makes minor errors in data reporting, such as stating that teenagers contributed less than 'mens'. Overall, all parts of the task are addressed, but the accuracy of the overview and data interpretation places this in the Band 6.0 category.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is organized into four distinct paragraphs, following a logical structure with an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs for male and female data. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'Overall', 'whilst', 'Furthermore', and 'afterward'. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical, as seen in awkward transitions and slight structural awkwardness ('For female, teenagers ranging between...'). Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate categories, and there is a clear overall progression. This meets the criteria for Band 6.5.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student attempts a range of vocabulary appropriate for Task 1, including terms like 'contributing', 'favourable', 'upward trend', and 'downfall'. However, there are several spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'comapres' (compares), 'drpping' (dropping), 'womens' (women's), and 'aging' (aged). Additionally, some phrasing is slightly unnatural ('physical activity was highly favourable'). The lexical range is adequate for the task and allows communication of the main points, but errors in spelling and word formation prevent it from reaching a higher band, placing it firmly at Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including participial phrases ('ranging between 15 to 24') and subordinate clauses ('whilst dropping to 42.2%'). There are several grammatical and mechanical errors throughout the text, including typos ('comapres', 'drpping', 'to54'), incorrect pluralisation ('mens'), and slight punctuation/preposition issues ('age group 65 and over' vs '65 above'). Despite these errors, meaning is rarely impeded, and the sentence structures show sufficient variety to satisfy Band 6.0 descriptors.
