Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the task by reporting the main features and making comparisons between Australian men and women across different age groups. An overview is attempted at the beginning of the second paragraph, noting that women were generally more active than men. However, there are notable inaccuracies in reporting the data: for instance, the student states that 'In the last group the age of 65 and more boths are same', whereas the chart shows male participation at 46.7% and female at 47.1%. Additionally, the data points for some age brackets are described rather vaguely or partially, and key trends like the fluctuating male participation are not fully synthesised. These data misreadings and slightly fragmented reporting place this aspect of the response in Band 5.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is arranged into paragraphs, beginning with an introduction, an overview, and body details. However, the logical progression is hindered by poor paragraphing, abrupt transitions, and frequent structural fragmentation (such as sentences being awkwardly broken or run together, e.g., 'In the age of 15 to 24 mens were more active than women the percentange of...'). Cohesive devices are minimal and sometimes repetitive or inaccurate ('On the other hand', 'For tge'). Although an overall progression is discernible, referencing is often unclear due to grammatical issues, resulting in a performance that aligns with Band 5 descriptors for cohesion and coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms related to data reporting such as 'percentage', 'active', 'rise', and 'fall'. However, there are frequent spelling errors ('conpares', 'mens', 'percentange', 'womes', 'tge') and word-formation errors ('aged group', 'activities are similar'). Less common vocabulary is attempted with limited success and lexical control is shaky. Although communication is not entirely impeded, the frequent spelling and word-choice errors restrict the lexical score to Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response exhibits a very limited range of grammatical structures. Simple sentences predominate, and attempts at complex or compound structures are consistently marred by punctuation errors, run-on sentences, and missing articles or prepositions (e.g., 'Overall, the women were more active than mens in mostly groups'). Errors in subject-verb agreement and pluralisation (e.g., 'boths are same', 'womes physical activity') are frequent and often cause difficulty for the reader. Given the high frequency of grammatical inaccuracies and the lack of complex sentence control, a Band 4.5 is warranted, rounded to 5.0 as per standard whole/half band conventions.
