Student answer (Band 6.5)

The bar chart compares the total percentage of regular physical activities in Australian men and women in 2010.

Overall, the highest regular physical activity was noticed in women in all different age groups, except for teenagers, where males became dominant in it. Men and women showed a similar interest between the ages of 65 and over.

In males, aged between 15 to 24, physical activity was highly favorable, contributing 52.8%, whilst dropping to 42.2% for men aged between 25 to 34. Furthermore, the least contribution was shown by the age group 35 to 44, standing at only 39.5%; afterwards, physical activities followed an upward trend for the age groups 45 to 54, 55 to 64, and 65 and above, standing at 43.1%, 45.1%, and 46.7% respectively.

For females, teenagers ranging between 15 to 24 stood at 47.7%, contributing less than men. In addition, the value rose in all age groups until reaching 53.3% for women between 45 to 54. Afterwards, it showed a slight downfall for women aged 55 to 64 and 65 and above, standing at 53% and 47.1% respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The student has successfully addressed all parts of the prompt by summarizing the main features and making relevant comparisons between Australian men and women in 2010. The overview effectively captures the general trend that women had higher physical activity in most age groups, except for the 15 to 24 bracket where men dominated, and the 65 and over bracket where participation was similar. Key data points, such as 52.8% for young males and 53.3% for women aged 45 to 54, are accurately cited from the chart. The response is well-developed, with logical grouping of data for males and females in separate body paragraphs. This meets the criteria for a high band score in Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the overview, followed by separate body paragraphs for male and female demographics. Cohesive devices such as 'Whilst', 'Furthermore', 'afterwards', and 'In addition' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and effectively. However, referencing in the opening sentence ('total percentage of regular physical activities in Australian men and women') is slightly awkward, which prevents a higher score. Overall, cohesion is well-managed and ideas are clearly sequenced.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a sufficient and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully employing terms such as 'dominant', 'favorable', 'downfall', and 'respectively'. There are some minor lexical inaccuracies or awkward collocations, such as 'total percentage of regular physical activities' instead of participation rates, and 'physical activity was highly favorable' instead of participation was highest. Nevertheless, less common items are attempted with some awareness of style, and the vocabulary is adequate to convey the data accurately without impeding communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating participial phrases ('contributing 52.8%', 'standing at only 39.5%') and subordinate clauses effectively. Grammatical control is generally good, with frequent error-free sentences. There are some minor slips or awkward phrasings, such as 'males became dominant in it' where 'it' lacks a clear referent, but these errors do not impede communication. Punctuation is used correctly to separate clauses and list figures.
