Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to cover all age groups for both males and females in 2010. However, the response completely lacks an overall summary or overview, which is a crucial requirement for Academic Task 1. Instead of selecting and reporting the main trends and making meaningful comparisons, the writer lists data points mechanically in a repetitive 'X did Y whereas Z did W' structure. Furthermore, some data points are slightly inaccurate, and the failure to group or synthesise information prevents the response from reaching a higher band. To improve, the student must step back from individual numbers and identify overarching trends, such as which gender was more active in younger versus older age groups.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is organised into three paragraphs, but paragraphing is poorly handled, with the body text compressed awkwardly. Cohesion relies entirely on repetitive conjunctions like 'whereas', 'meanwhile', and 'on the other hand', often chained together within the same long sentence without proper punctuation. For instance, the second paragraph is a massive run-on sentence that links multiple clauses with 'whereas' and 'meanwhile'. There is a lack of clear overall progression because the data is presented as a list rather than a structured comparison. To enhance coherence, the student should break long, rambling sentences into manageable units and use a wider variety of cohesive devices logically.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is largely repetitive and basic, relying heavily on phrases like 'did regular physical activity' and 'at the age of', which are repeated verbatim across almost every sentence. There are also several lexical and spelling errors, such as 'australian' (uncapitalized), 'iin', and 'excuted' (executed). Less common vocabulary is virtually absent, and paraphrasing of the prompt is minimal. While the language is mostly understandable, the lack of lexical range and precision keeps the score at this level. To achieve a higher score, the student needs to incorporate synonyms such as 'participated in fitness activities', 'engagement', and 'exercise rates'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The grammatical range is very limited. The response consists almost entirely of long, compound sentences joined by coordinating or subordinating conjunctions in a repetitive pattern, lacking true complex structures with varied subordinate clauses. There are frequent punctuation errors, particularly run-on sentences with missing commas and periods, such as the entire second paragraph being one single sentence. Capitalization is also neglected at the beginning of words like 'australian'. Although basic grammar is generally controlled, the persistent structural monotony and punctuation errors prevent the response from achieving a higher grade.
