Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The student covers all parts of the task well, providing an overview and making relevant comparisons across age groups. Key features such as the peak participation for young males and middle-aged females are highlighted, and specific data points are cited (e.g., 52.8 and 47.7). However, there are some misinterpretations of the data trends; for instance, the text states that in the 25 to 34 age group 'the proportion of men decreased by 10.8%' compared to the previous bracket, and misreads some percentages and directions of change (such as stating the proportion of men decreased from 42.2 to 39.5 in the 35 to 44 bracket when comparing it incorrectly, or misstating the 65 and over data). Despite these minor data reading inaccuracies, the response successfully addresses the core prompt and identifies main trends, placing it firmly at Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is organized with a clear overall progression, moving from an introductory statement and an overview into detailed body paragraphs analyzing specific age groups. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'Overall,' 'In age group 15 to 24,' and 'while.' However, paragraphing is somewhat weak, as the body of the essay is clustered into one very dense paragraph rather than being broken down logically by gender or clear thematic groupings. Referencing and linking between sentences occasionally feel mechanical. Consequently, the organization satisfies the requirements for Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully employing terms such as 'proportion,' 'involved,' 'participating,' and 'decline.' There are, however, noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'proprtion,' 'decreaced,' and 'increace.' Furthermore, phrasing like 'involved in physical activities on daily basis' and 'actively participating in workout' are slightly unnatural for describing survey data on regular physical activity. Because these lexical inaccuracies and spelling errors do not impede overall communication, the vocabulary usage aligns well with Band 6.0 descriptors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing introductory prepositional phrases and comparative structures ('while women in age group... were really interested'). There are, however, several grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('Australian male and female of different age groups') and punctuation/preposition slips. Despite these errors, the majority of simple sentences are accurate, and the mistakes do not impede the reader's understanding. This performance is characteristic of Band 6.0, reflecting a mix of structures and a moderate frequency of errors.
