Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to cover the main features of the chart, noting the highest and lowest percentages and making some comparisons between genders across age groups. However, there are notable inaccuracies in reporting the data. For instance, the student states that in the 14-25 age group (which is labelled as 15 to 24 on the chart), males were at 52.8% and females at 47.7, yet later claims that 'the young boys did secondly rank' and that males were 'most popular in physical activities' despite women actually recording higher percentages across the 35 to 64 age ranges (e.g., 53.3% for women aged 45-54 compared to 43.1% for men). The overview is also confusingly phrased ('Overall the mature women did more physical activity than male'). These issues place the response at Band 5.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is divided into paragraphs, which provides a basic structural framework, but the logical progression within and between paragraphs is faulty. Sentences often lack smooth transitions, resulting in a disjointed reading experience. For instance, the second paragraph abruptly introduces general statements without clear supporting links. Cohesive devices are used minimally and sometimes inaccurately, such as 'In the end' to introduce the final age group. Referencing is also weak in places, leading to ambiguous statements like 'even they are male or female their ratio was almost same'. Overall arrangement is present, but cohesion is mechanical and inadequate in places, fitting a Band 5 profile.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is generally basic and repetitive, with frequent reliance on simple terms such as 'percentage', 'ratio', 'people', and 'activity'. There are also lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as 'secondly rank physical activity', 'followed fluctuated trend', and the misspelling 'excersice'. Less common vocabulary is attempted with limited success or inappropriate word choice (e.g., 'most popular' to describe age groups participating in activity). While the meaning can mostly be discerned, the restricted range and noticeable errors constrain the response to Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control is inconsistent. There are frequent grammatical errors, including missing articles ('the bar chart illustrate', 'in different age group'), incorrect prepositions ('on the age of 64'), comma splices, and subject-verb agreement issues ('women were more interested... and their level remained... while men's percentage followed fluctuated trend and thery were'). Punctuation is also weak, with run-on clauses and missing terminal punctuation in places. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a Band 5 level of grammatical accuracy.
