IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar chart illustrates the percentage of Australian men and women doing regular physical activity in 2010 from different age group.
Overall, the contribution of men in doing regular exercises is less than the females in almost all age group except the youngest demographic. Additionally, the activity level among women peaked in mid-life like at the age group of 45 to 54, while the male contribution in activity is highest at youngest age. The horizontal part represents the age group of men and women, while vertical line shows the percentage in the chart.
In the youngest age group that is 15 to 24, men recorded the highest activity rate overall, with 52.8. However, this trend reversed in the 25 to 34 age group where females engagement level rose up at the 48.9%. Moreover, the male figure significantly dropped to 39.5% at the mid-life of 35-44 as compared to 52.5% of females.
This pattern continued across the middle age groups. The contribution of females taking part in physical activity increased further, reaching to the 53.3% in the 45 to 54 age group. In contract, the male participation started recovering slightly to around 43.1% at 45 to 54 age group. Finally, at the age of 65 and over, both genders converged, with 46.7 and 47.1%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the chart and making relevant comparisons between the genders across various age groups. Key data points, such as the peak for men in the 15 to 24 group (52.8%) and the peak for women in the 45 to 54 group (53.3%), are accurately cited. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, capturing the main trends well. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in reporting specific figures, such as stating that engagement in the 25 to 34 group rose to 48.9% (when 48.9% is actually the female figure, but the phrasing implies a general rise) and minor descriptive flaws. Overall, the task is well-handled.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is logically organised with a clear overall progression. It begins with an introductory statement and an overview paragraph, followed by detailed body paragraphs grouped by age categories. Cohesive devices are used adequately to signal transitions, such as 'Additionally', 'However', 'Moreover', and 'Finally'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to structure the essay. However, there are occasional awkward transitions and minor cohesion faults, such as 'The horizontal part represents...', which is slightly mechanical and unnecessary for an academic task 1 summary.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'illustrates', 'demographic', 'engagement level', and 'converged'. There are, however, some awkward word choices and collocation errors, such as 'contribution of men in doing regular exercises' and 'male contribution in activity is highest', which sound unnatural. Spelling is generally accurate, but some minor lexical inaccuracies persist, keeping the score at a solid Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including relative clauses and comparative structures (e.g., 'while the male contribution in activity is highest at youngest age'). There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings throughout the text, such as missing articles ('from different age group' instead of 'age groups', 'at youngest age' instead of 'at the youngest age'), preposition errors ('in the age group of 45 to 54'), and a few awkward expressions like 'rose up at the 48.9%'. Despite these errors, communication is not impeded.
