Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The student addresses the task by summarising the main features of the chart, providing accurate figures such as 52.8% for males aged 15-24 and 39.5% for males aged 35-44. Comparisons are made between genders across age groups. However, the overview is flawed and inaccurate; the student states that physical activity performed by women recorded the highest figure overall while men had the lowest, which misinterprets the data since activity levels fluctuate considerably between genders across different brackets rather than one gender universally dominating the entire chart. Furthermore, there are minor omissions in covering the 55-64 age bracket fully. Consequently, the response satisfies the criteria for Band 6.0 due to relevant information presented with some under-developed and inaccurate overarching generalisations.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response is organised into an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that follow the chronological age groups. However, the paragraphing is underdeveloped, with the main body squashed into dense blocks that lack clear progression. Cohesive devices are repetitive and mechanical, relying heavily on phrases like 'compared with', 'However', 'Furthermore', and 'While on the other hand'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, such as 'the figure of male performing physical activities' where pronouns and determiners are awkwardly handled. Punctuation errors around conjunctions and commas further disrupt the flow. This fits the Band 5.0 descriptors, where there is some organisation but limited and mechanical cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying basic statistical concepts and categories such as 'proportion', 'percentage', 'age group', and 'rise' or 'fall'. However, the range is limited and repetitive, with verbs like 'see a rise' or 'see a fall' overused throughout the text. There are also notable lexical and word-form errors, such as 'the number of doing physical activities' instead of 'the number of people doing' or 'the proportion of men doing'. Spelling and capitalization errors also appear, such as 'australia' and 'man' instead of 'men'. These inaccuracies place the response firmly at Band 5.0, where vocabulary is minimally adequate with noticeable errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is weak. There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'the figure was 52.8%... compared with female 47.7%' and 'percentage of man performing physical activity see a fall'. Punctuation is also problematic, with missing spaces around punctuation marks and comma splices or misplaced commas. Complex structures are often faulty or awkward, impeding readability in places. These persistent grammatical inaccuracies and limited structural control align with a Band 5.0 score.
