Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The student attempts to cover all parts of the task by reporting data across various age groups, but the execution falls short of a higher band due to significant weaknesses. Crucially, the student misinterprets the data labels, incorrectly stating in the second paragraph that the dark coloured bars show women and the faded bars show men, when the chart actually shows the opposite (as verified by the male and female data points). Furthermore, there is no real overview provided; instead, the writer simply describes the layout of the graph in the second paragraph and repeats a summary statement at the end ("Ultimately, it give us the information...") rather than highlighting main trends or overall comparisons as required. Data selection is also mechanical, listing every single data point without synthesizing information or making meaningful comparisons between genders across the age groups. This performance fits the Band 5 descriptor for partially addressing the task with under-developed features.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates some basic organizational structure with an introduction, a body of separate sentences for each age group, and a concluding sentence. However, there is a distinct lack of clear overall progression. The second paragraph functions awkwardly as a mechanical description of the axes and chart design rather than a proper overview of trends. Paragraphing is extremely fragmented; almost every single age group is given its own tiny one-sentence paragraph, which disrupts the logical flow of the essay. Cohesive devices are either missing or repetitive, heavily relying on formulaic transitions like "The age group from..." and "respectively" without creating a smooth, cohesive text. Referencing is also faulty due to the confusion over the male and female categories. Overall, this corresponds to a Band 5 score where organization is rudimentary and cohesive devices are inadequate or mechanical.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student uses a limited but minimally adequate range of vocabulary suitable for describing statistical data, employing words such as "proportion," "percentage," "ratio," and "age groups." However, there are noticeable lexical errors and awkward collocations throughout the text. For instance, the student writes "who involved in physical activities" instead of "who engaged in" or "who participated in," and uses "ratio" interchangeably with "percentage," which is mathematically inaccurate for percentages. Spelling errors also occur, such as the lowercase "australian." Attempts at less common vocabulary are minimal and often lead to unnatural phrasing. Because the vocabulary is adequate to convey the basic topic but contains noticeable errors and repetition that restrict precision, a Band 5.0 is appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The essay displays a very limited range of grammatical structures. Most sentences follow a repetitive, simple pattern (e.g., "The age group from 15 to 24 having ratio of..."), and several sentences lack main verbs entirely, functioning as fragments rather than complete clauses. There are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and participle forms, such as "The age group... having ratio," "The people... has," and "it give us." Punctuation errors are also present, such as missing spaces after commas (e.g., "Ultimately,it give us"). Because complex sentences are rarely attempted successfully and basic errors are frequent, the writing aligns closely with the Band 5 descriptors for grammar.
