Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The student manages to cover the main features of the chart, reporting specific data points for both men and women across the different age groups. Key comparisons are made, such as noting that men had higher participation in the 15 to 24 age group while women dominated most other age brackets, and identifying 45 to 54 year old females at 53.3% as the highest figure on the chart. However, the overview is extremely weak, consisting of a single unpunctuated sentence ("overall the female group domenates the male group except teenage group of men") which lacks proper formatting and fails to adequately summarise the broader trends. Furthermore, there are some data reading inaccuracies; for instance, the writer incorrectly states that women were higher across the 45 to above 65 category, missing that men actually had higher participation in the 65 and over group (46.7% vs 47.1% for women, which are nearly identical rather than showing a female dominance). These shortcomings place this response firmly in Band 5.5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response shows some logical organisation by following the age groups chronologically from youngest to oldest, and basic cohesive devices like "Meanwhile", "furthermore", and "while" are used to link ideas. However, paragraphing is poorly handled, with erratic line breaks and a lack of proper introductory and concluding structure. The overview is awkwardly placed and unpunctuated. Cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or repetitive, and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as shifting abruptly between percentages and people without clear antecedents. These organizational flaws restrict the text to a Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for conveying basic numerical data, employing terms like "percentage", "community", and "individuals". However, there are numerous spelling errors and awkward lexical choices throughout the text, such as "domenates" (dominates), "musculin" (masculine), "feminen" (feminine), "marture" (mature), "interst" (interest), "exirse" (exercise), and "figeo" or "figer" (figure). The range of vocabulary is limited and repetitive, and these persistent misspellings and word-choice inaccuracies occasionally cause strain for the reader, placing the response at a Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating relative clauses and comparative forms. However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with frequent errors including punctuation failures (e.g., lowercase letters at the start of sentences, missing full stops), fragments, and subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., "womens clearly shows more interst"). Many sentences contain structural awkwardness, such as "45 to 54 year old men were 43.1% and female were 53.3% which was the highest figeo of the bar chart." These persistent errors in grammar and punctuation can cause difficulty for the reader, justifying a Band 5.0.
