Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student has attempted to summarise the main features of the bar chart, identifying overall trends such as females generally engaging more in physical activity, alongside specific data points. However, there are some inaccuracies in reporting the data (e.g., stating the 45 to 54 age group shows figures at 53.3% and 43.1% when 43.1% is actually the male figure for 45-54, but phrasing the comparisons somewhat confusingly). Furthermore, the response falls short of the 150-word minimum requirement, containing only 132 words. This under-length restriction prevents the response from achieving a band score higher than 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The text is organized into paragraphs with an introductory sentence, an overview, and body paragraphs detailing specific age groups. However, progression is somewhat disjointed. The writer uses cohesive devices and referencing, but phrases like 'Followed by the 35 to 44 age group at 52.5% & 39.5, respectively' create awkward sentence fragments. Paragraphing is present, but the abrupt transitions and list-like presentation of data hinder the overall flow. Cohesion is occasionally mechanical or faulty.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, attempting some less common collocations such as 'engaged in daily physical activity' (though 'daily' misrepresents the chart's 'regular physical activity'). There are noticeable errors in word choice, such as 'females were more keen towards physical activity' instead of 'keen on'. Spelling is generally acceptable, but the limited range and occasional unnatural phrasing restrict the score to a 5.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but attempts at complex structures often lead to errors or fragments, such as 'Followed by the 35 to 44 age group at 52.5% & 39.5, respectively.' There are also punctuation and phrasing errors, such as 'amlost same'. While the grammar does not completely impede communication, frequent minor errors and incomplete syntactic structures prevent it from reaching a higher band.
