Student answer (Band 5.0)
The bar chart illustrates the percentage of Australian men and women in various age groups performed consistent physical activity in 2010. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response covers some of the main features of the chart, noting the overall difference between genders and highlighting specific age groups such as the 15 to 24 bracket and those over 65. However, there are some inaccuracies in the data reporting, such as stating that females peaked at 53.3% and then followed a downward trend, when the 45-54 group was 53.3% and the 55-64 group was nearly identical at 53.0% before dropping to 47.1%. Furthermore, the response is severely under-length at 127 words, failing to meet the 150-word minimum requirement. This under-length severely restricts the level of detail and comparison, capping the task achievement score at Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has an overall structure that attempts to present an introduction, overview, and body details. However, the text is presented in a single, poorly structured block rather than clear paragraphs, which severely impacts cohesion and visual organization. Cohesive devices are minimal and basic, with repetitive use of transition words like 'and' or 'then followed'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, for example in sentences like 'around 53.3% were the females followed by approximately the same percetage of males'. Progression through the data feels disjointed due to the lack of paragraphing and abrupt shifts between points, warranting a Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate to convey basic trends and figures, such as 'percentage', 'decline', and 'rising trend'. However, the range is quite limited, and there are several awkward word choices and repetitions, such as 'performed consistent physical activity' instead of 'participated in regular physical activity', and spelling/typographical errors like 'intially', 'percetage', and 'Techinically'. Attempts at less common vocabulary are either inaccurate or awkward. Because the lexical range is narrow and contains noticeable errors that occasionally hinder natural reading, it aligns best with Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is inconsistent. There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as missing prepositions or incorrect verb forms ('were performed regular physical activity', 'females were involved above 65years of age group'). Punctuation is also weak, with missing commas and run-on phrasing. While basic sentences are generally understandable, the frequency of structural errors and awkward syntactical choices places this text firmly in the Band 5.0 category.
