Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the chart well, providing a general overview and selecting relevant data points for comparison between men and women across different age groups. For instance, the writer correctly identifies that the 15-24 age group is the only one where male participation exceeds that of females (52.8% vs 47.7%), and notes the peak female participation in the 45-54 age bracket (53.3%). However, there are minor inaccuracies in data reporting; for example, the writer states that both genders have a 'similar' or 'same' percentage in the 65 and over group, whereas the chart shows 46.7% for males and 47.1% for females, which are close but not identical. Furthermore, the 35-44 age bracket is omitted from structured discussion despite women peaking in a different category. Overall, the task is addressed competently, earning a Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay is arranged into four paragraphs, providing a logical overall structure with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs dedicated to different age groups. However, progression is sometimes hindered by clunky transitions, such as 'In the beginning there is the age group ageing from...' and repetitive sentence openings. Cohesive devices are basic and occasionally used mechanically. Paragraphing is attempted, but body paragraphs are somewhat disjointed and could be grouped more logically (e.g., grouping younger versus older demographics). Referencing is sometimes unclear, as seen in the phrase 'at that age both genders have same percentage'. These issues place the response firmly at Band 5.5.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, but lacks flexibility and precision. The student successfully uses terms like 'percentage', 'age groups', and 'physical activities', but relies heavily on repetitive phrasing (e.g., 'regular physical activities' and 'percentage of ... doing regular physical activities'). There are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward collocations, such as 'ageing from' instead of 'aged' or 'in the age group of', and 'more percentage of female' instead of 'a higher percentage of females'. Less common vocabulary is attempted with limited success. Spelling is generally accurate, but the range of vocabulary remains basic, warranting a Band 5.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, though attempts at complex structures are frequently flawed. There are noticeable grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('there is more percentage of female who do...'), awkward relative clauses ('physical activities which they do regulary'), and minor spelling mistakes like 'regulary'. Furthermore, phrases like 'Citizens ageing from 55 to 64 the is only 45.1 active men whoa re doing regular activites' contain multiple structural breakdowns and typos. While communication is not severely impeded, the frequency of errors prevents the score from rising above Band 5.0.
