Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response attempts to address the task by describing parts of the bar chart, but it contains significant inaccuracies and misinterpretations of the data. For example, the overview claims that 'the Percentage of Australian women was increased whereas, men exercise ratio was decreased,' which does not accurately capture the chart's cross-sectional age group data (as it shows activity across different age cohorts in 2010, not changes over time). Furthermore, there are several factual errors regarding specific figures; the student misreads or misattributes several percentages and age ranges, such as stating women decreased in certain brackets where they actually increased. Consequently, the task is only partially addressed, leading to a Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has some basic organization, separating the introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs for men and women. However, there is no clear overall progression or logical structure linking the ideas smoothly. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as 'To begin,' 'In sharp contrast to that,' and repetitive use of connectors like 'also it climbed' and 'in addition.' Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs is faulty and disjointed, which impedes the flow of reading. This performance aligns with Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive, frequently relying on simple words and numerical proportions without much variation (e.g., 'proportion,' 'percentage,' 'increased,' 'decreased'). There are noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'men exercise ratio was decreased' and 'women percentage in Australia it was higher than men around 52.8 age 15 to 24.' These lexical limitations and awkward phrasings cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a limited range appropriate for Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control is weak. There are frequent grammatical errors, including missing prepositions, incorrect word forms, and flawed sentence structures, such as 'the proportion decreased sharply in the age 25 to 34 and also declined minimally in the age 35 to 44' and 'while, age women 65 and over grow 46.7.' Punctuation is also problematic with unnecessary commas and run-on phrasing. Because these errors are frequent and occasionally obscure the intended meaning, a band score of 5.0 is appropriate.
