Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the chart, presenting an overview and selecting key data points to compare men and women across different age groups. However, some ideas are under-developed or imprecise, such as the sweeping generalisation that women shared more interest overall without properly quantifying the complex crossing trends. While the report addresses all parts of the task, the lack of full extension for certain data sets keeps the content at this level. To reach a higher standard, the writer should ensure all key comparative features are explored with greater clarity and more precise support from the data.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The text has a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at paragraphing, separating the introduction, overview, and body paragraphs for women and men respectively. Logical progression is visible, though referencing and transitions are sometimes mechanical or a bit awkward, such as starting paragraphs abruptly with 'The highest figures were of...' or 'On the other hand'. Cohesive devices are used, but they can be repetitive or cause slight disruptions in the flow of information. To improve, the writer should work on smoother transitions between sentences and ensure that referencing pronouns clearly link to the intended subjects.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, providing basic terms to discuss percentages and age groups. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as 'more percentage', 'women intrested', and 'growing higher then women'. Spelling errors like 'throught', 'intrested', and 'abput' also occur. The range of vocabulary is limited, and attempts at less common lexical items are missing or marred by poor collocation. To progress, the writer needs to expand their vocabulary range, learn correct word forms, and pay closer attention to spelling and precise descriptive phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, such as 'The bar chart illustrates the percentage of Australian citizens...'. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text, including prepositional and article errors like 'in distinct ages' and 'with 53.3 and 53 percentage'. Faulty comparative structures also appear, such as 'had more percentage than women'. While these errors rarely impede overall communication, they persist across multiple sentences. To achieve a higher band, the writer must reduce the frequency of grammatical errors and demonstrate better control over complex sentence structures and number agreements.
