Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the bar chart, such as the peak male age group and the general trends across genders, but it stops short of fully exploring all data points. While it attempts to summarize information, some ideas are limited and under-developed, and the overview lacks a completely clear summary of the broader trends. For instance, the student notes that 'women in almost all age group were the highest,' but some figures lack precision and the selection of data is slightly disjointed. To reach a higher band, the response needs to present a fully developed overview that clearly outlines the main overarching differences between men and women across all age groups without relying on fragmented data points.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is a basic logical organization and the response is divided into paragraphs, but the overall progression of ideas is sometimes hindered by mechanical or faulty cohesive devices. Phrases like 'In contrast' are used, but they do not always logically connect the contrasting data smoothly. Referencing can also be unclear, such as when shifting between age groups and percentages. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion within paragraphs needs better control to guide the reader effortlessly through the comparisons. To improve, the student should ensure that cohesive devices are used more accurately and that transitions between sentences clearly signal how the data relates to previous points.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, attempting less common items like 'proportion,' 'engaged,' and 'deeply involved,' but there are noticeable errors in word choice and form, such as 'percetage' (spelling), 'age group of male' instead of 'males,' and awkward phrasing like 'were the highest who involved.' These errors do not completely impede communication, but they restrict the lexical range and precision. To achieve a higher score, the student should focus on using correct word forms and more precise collocations when describing statistical data, avoiding unnatural phrasing while expanding the variety of vocabulary used.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, but it contains frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that can cause some difficulty for the reader. There are issues with subject-verb agreement and pluralization, such as 'The given bar charts illustrates' (singular/plural mismatch) and 'women in almost all age group' (missing plural 'groups'). Additionally, article usage is sometimes faulty, as seen in 'Male in the age group... were least interested.' Complex structures are attempted, but they are often marred by these recurring errors. To progress, the writer needs to ensure greater accuracy in basic grammatical agreements, plurals, and article use.
