Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 150 words, containing only 92 words, which significantly restricts the breadth of the answer. While the writer attempts to present an overview and select some key features from the chart, such as the 15 to 24 age group and the 35 to 44 age group, the information provided is very limited and under-developed. Furthermore, there are inaccuracies in reporting the data; for instance, the text refers to physical 'workers' rather than participation in physical activity, and misinterprets the data trends in places. To reach a higher level, the writer must write at least 150 words, provide a more complete summary of the chart's main features across all age categories, and ensure that data is reported accurately.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response shows some basic organization by attempting an introduction, an overview, and body sentences. However, there is no clear overall progression due to the extreme brevity of the text. Paragraphing is fragmented, with single-sentence paragraphs used instead of cohesive, well-developed groupings of ideas. Cohesive devices are minimal or inaccurate, such as the abrupt transition in the final paragraph. To improve Coherence and Cohesion, the writer should logically group information into standard paragraphs, ensure a clear development of ideas from the introduction through the overview to the details, and use a wider and more accurate range of cohesive devices to connect sentences smoothly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, featuring basic terms and noticeable word choice errors that occasionally cause confusion, such as referring to people doing physical activity as 'physical worker'. There are also grammatical form errors related to vocabulary, such as 'female' used as a countable noun ('female from all the age group'). Spelling is generally acceptable, but the range of vocabulary is restricted and repetitive. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to incorporate a wider and more flexible range of vocabulary, including less common lexical items, and ensure greater precision in word choice and word formation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer demonstrates a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on basic patterns with occasional unsuccessful attempts at complexity. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the short text, including pluralization errors ('all the age group', 'percentages of Australian male and female'), article omissions, and issues with subject-verb agreement. These errors occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. To improve in this area, the writer needs to increase the variety of complex sentence structures while maintaining control over basic grammar, paying closer attention to articles, plurals, and subject-verb agreement.
