Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the task by selecting key data points from the chart, such as the peak activity levels for men and women across various age categories. However, the overview contains notable factual inaccuracies, specifically claiming that females were more active than men at all ages, which is contradicted by the data for the 15 to 24 age group where males recorded a higher percentage. Furthermore, the statement that both genders participated at the same level in the 65 and over group is inaccurate, as the figures are 46.7% for males and 47.1% for females. While the main features are partially presented, the presence of these inaccurate generalizations prevents the response from achieving a higher score.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a basic organizational structure with paragraphs dedicated to an overview and specific body details. However, the progression is frequently hindered by awkward phrasing and repetitive structural patterns, such as the overuse of the phrase 'when both...' or 'when men accounted for...'. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and sometimes inaccurately, leading to a lack of smooth transitions between sentences. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, making it difficult to follow the logical relationship between the data points presented.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate to convey basic information about the chart, utilizing terms such as 'proportion', 'percentage', and 'age group'. However, there are notable word choice and collocation errors throughout the text, such as 'female was more active' instead of 'females were more active', 'participated' used intransitively incorrectly, and 'surppessed' (suppressed/surpassed). Additionally, spelling errors like 'regualr' appear in the text. While meaning is generally communicated, the persistent lexical inaccuracies restrict the score to this band level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response relies on a limited range of sentence structures, and attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty. There are persistent grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'female a recorded', 'female surppessed to male'), incorrect prepositions, and awkward clause structures like 'the age group of 15 to 24 when men accounted for...'. These frequent errors require the reader to occasionally decode the intended meaning, which is characteristic of this grammar band.
