Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response attempts to address the prompt by discussing the bar chart on Australian physical activity in 2010, but the coverage is partial and confused. The overview paragraph is largely incomprehensible, failing to outline the main trends clearly. Furthermore, many of the specific data points cited in the body paragraphs are inaccurate or misread when compared to the visual data. For instance, the text claims that for the 15 to 24 age group, the male percentage was 'high around 55%', whereas the actual figure is 52.8%. Similarly, data for other age brackets are imprecise or garbled. To move to a higher band, the writer must ensure that the overview captures the most salient global trends accurately and that all data selected from the chart is reported with factual precision.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has some organisation with basic paragraphing, but there is no clear overall progression of ideas. The transitions between sentences and paragraphs feel disjointed, and the relationships between ideas are often obscure. Cohesive devices are used minimally or inappropriately, resulting in sentences that do not flow logically from one to the next. For example, phrases such as 'Moving towards rest of data' and 'last group of the each activity' create mechanical and confusing links rather than a smooth progression. To improve, the writer needs to structure the response around clear logical groupings, use standard cohesive markers accurately, and ensure that referencing is clear so the reader can easily follow the comparison between men and women.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is basic, repetitive, and restricted to simple terms related to the graph. There are noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and collocation throughout the text, such as using 'australian' with lowercase letters, 'ladys', 'gents', and 'decrease percentage' instead of a decreased percentage. These lexical inaccuracies often cause difficulty and strain for the reader in trying to understand the intended meaning. To achieve a higher score, the writer must expand their vocabulary range by incorporating precise, task-appropriate vocabulary such as 'proportion', 'demographic', 'fluctuate', and 'marginal', while paying closer attention to correct word forms and spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple or poorly attempted complex sentences that frequently break down grammatically. There are frequent errors in verb forms, articles, prepositions, and subject-verb agreement, such as 'percentage of australian male and female' and 'women proportion for 47.7%'. Punctuation is also erratic, and many sentences lack essential grammatical elements, making them difficult to parse. To progress, the writer needs to focus on constructing grammatically sound simple and compound sentences, ensure proper subject-verb agreement, use articles consistently, and minimise basic grammatical errors that impede overall readability.
