Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response attempts to address the prompt by summarising the data from the bar chart regarding Australian men and women doing regular physical activity in 2010. However, the coverage is only partial because some of the key features and comparisons are either inaccurately reported or under-developed. For instance, the opening statement misinterprets the tense ("showed" instead of shows), and descriptions of specific age groups are confusingly expressed, such as stating that in certain age brackets men and women were "approximately same but difference nearly percentages was 6 to 8." Although an overview is provided at the end, it lacks precision and fails to clearly synthesize the broader trends across all age categories. To reach a higher band, the response needs to present a clearer and more accurate overview of the main trends and select and report data more effectively without relying on vague or misleading comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response attempts to organise information into paragraphs, but there is a lack of clear overall progression. The movement between ideas feels disjointed, and the transitional phrases used, such as "Now, in age of..." and "overall, women doing more...", are unnatural and do not effectively guide the reader through the data. Furthermore, referencing and logical linking between sentences are weak, causing the information to feel fragmented. For example, jumping abruptly from specific age group statistics to the concluding summary without adequate bridging creates a jerky flow. To improve coherence and cohesion, the writer should ensure that ideas are logically sequenced with clear transitions, and that each paragraph has a distinct and unified focus that contributes to a smooth, overarching progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, barely meeting the minimum requirements for the task. The student relies heavily on basic terms and phrases, such as "did well," "performed well," and "rose with some high percentages," which lack precision. There are also notable lexical and word-form errors throughout the text, including the incorrect spelling and collocation in "physic al activity" and awkward expressions like "same think for thier fitness." These errors and the restricted range of vocabulary occasionally cause strain and difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to incorporate a wider and more flexible range of vocabulary, including less common lexical items related to data reporting (such as proportion, fluctuate, or decline), and ensure greater accuracy in word choice and spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The grammatical structures used are very limited, consisting mainly of simple sentences and flawed attempts at complex ones. Frequent grammatical errors are present throughout the text, including missing articles ("percentage of Australian different age groups"), incorrect verb tenses ("This bar chart showed", "male done well"), subject-verb agreement issues ("men and women was nearly similar"), and incorrect prepositions ("In age of 25 to 34"). These frequent errors frequently cause difficulty for the reader and obscure the intended meaning. To improve in this area, the writer must work on basic sentence construction, ensure correct verb forms and subject-verb agreement, and exercise greater care with articles and prepositions to reduce the frequency of errors.
