Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response attempts to address the prompt by summarising the bar chart comparing the percentage of Australian men and women doing regular physical activity in 2010. However, the task is only partially addressed because the overview contains inaccurate generalisations and confusion regarding the data trends, stating incorrectly that the percentage of women increased in all age groups compared to men. Furthermore, key features such as the peak participation rates for each gender are under-developed or inaccurately reported. Data is occasionally misquoted, such as claiming participation for women reached 53% generally across the 35 to 64 age range when the chart shows distinct figures for different age brackets. The overall position lacks clarity due to these reporting inaccuracies.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response shows some organisation with an introduction, an overview paragraph, and body paragraphs, but there is no clear overall progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are used mechanically or inaccurately, such as repetitive transitions like 'To begin with' and 'On the other side', which do not accurately signal the relationship between ideas. Paragraphing is attempted, but the body paragraphs are disjointed and difficult to follow. Referencing is sometimes unclear, making it hard to determine whether data points refer to men, women, or both without close cross-checking against the visual data.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical resource is limited but minimally adequate to convey the basic topic of the chart. There are noticeable errors in word choice, form, and collocation, such as writing 'men women' instead of 'men and women', 'teenager group' instead of 'teenage group', and 'physical percentage' or 'physical activity percentage of men'. Spelling and word-form inaccuracies recur throughout the text, causing occasional difficulty for the reader and restricting the vocabulary to a basic, repetitive level that fails to demonstrate flexibility or precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures. Simple sentences dominate, and attempts at complex structures are frequently faulty or ungrammatical, such as 'The data shows in percentage' and 'percentage of man and women were accounted for'. There are frequent errors in grammatical control, including missing articles ('percentage of man and women'), incorrect prepositions ('for 15 to 24 age groups'), and subject-verb agreement issues ('the percentage of women were increased'). These frequent errors cause strain and difficulty for the reader.
