Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response attempts to summarize the bar chart by presenting some key data points and comparisons, which places it at this level. However, the coverage is incomplete and features mechanical reporting of figures rather than a well-synthesized overview. For instance, the writer incorrectly states that men aged 15 to 24 had the most percentage overall, missing the broader trends across age brackets. Additionally, data selection is somewhat repetitive, focusing heavily on individual age brackets without drawing clear, broader comparative conclusions between genders. While a basic attempt is made to address the prompt, the lack of a fully developed overview and limited selection of main features prevent the response from achieving a higher score.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The text shows some logical organization, dividing the information into distinct paragraphs that attempt to follow the age groups in chronological order. However, there is no clear overall progression; the movement between ideas feels disjointed rather than naturally flowing. Cohesive devices are used in a very repetitive and mechanical manner, such as the constant repetition of phrases like 'At the age of' and 'Australian women had the most percentage'. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion is weak because referencing is sometimes unclear, and sentences are linked rigidly rather than smoothly. To improve, the writer needs to vary cohesive devices and ensure that ideas flow logically from one sentence to the next without sounding formulaic.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The writer relies heavily on basic, repetitive phrasing, such as 'most percentage' and 'regular physical activity', rather than employing synonyms or more precise statistical language (e.g., 'highest proportion' or 'peak'). There are noticeable lexical inadequacies and awkward word choices, such as 'had the most percentage' instead of 'accounted for the highest percentage' or 'participated the most'. Furthermore, awkward expressions like 'Australian men didn't even close to the percentage' demonstrate a restricted range of vocabulary and incorrect collocations. To reach a higher band, the student should expand their range of vocabulary to include varied nouns and adjectives for describing data trends.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple or repetitive subject-verb-object constructions. Attempts at more complex sentences often result in faulty grammar, such as missing verbs in phrases like 'Australian women till the highest number' or incorrect comparative structures like 'had the most percentage of regular physical activity than Australian men'. Frequent errors in grammar and punctuation are present throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'Australian men percentage are close') and awkward prepositional phrases. These errors can cause occasional difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer must work on mastering basic sentence formulation, correct verb tenses, and accurate comparative forms.
