Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the task partially by reporting some key features and comparisons from the bar chart, such as the peak figures for men and women in the 15-24 and 45-54 age groups respectively. However, the overview provided contains inaccurate generalisations that do not accurately reflect the overall data, specifically regarding the age brackets and trends. Furthermore, some data points are misreported or vaguely expressed, such as the description of the 35 to 64 age group. To reach a higher band, the overview needs to accurately summarise the main trends without containing factual inaccuracies, and all key features should be fully and correctly reported with precise comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response shows some organisation with an attempt to structure the essay into an introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the sequencing of information is disjointed. Cohesive devices are used very mechanically or are inaccurate, as seen in the awkward transitions and the lack of proper linking phrases between sentences. Paragraphing is also poorly managed, particularly with the overview sentence being isolated and inadequately structured. To improve, the student should ensure a logical flow of ideas from one paragraph to the next, use a wider range of appropriate cohesive devices naturally, and structure paragraphs so that each has a clear, unified focus.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. There are noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word form throughout the response, such as 'illuestes' for illustrates, 'perportion' for proportion, 'catergory' for category, and 'dramtically'. These errors, alongside imprecise terms like 'least accounted' and 'ratio', cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a weak control of lexical features. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to expand their vocabulary range, use correct spelling consistently, and employ appropriate terminology related to data reporting, such as 'proportion', 'percentage', and 'fluctuate', with accurate collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple or faulty complex sentences. There are frequent grammatical errors, including missing prepositions, incorrect verb tenses, subject-verb agreement issues, and very poor punctuation with run-on sentences and missing full stops. For instance, phrases like 'women age from age 44 to 64 had highest percentage' lack necessary articles and accurate prepositional phrasing. To move up to the next band, the student must increase the variety of complex sentence forms and improve basic grammatical accuracy, focusing particularly on articles, prepositions within grammatical patterns, and sentence boundaries.
