Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by presenting an overview and reporting key figures from the bar chart. However, some areas are developed more fully than others, and a few inaccuracies occur in data reporting, such as the statement that 'women have higher percentages of regular excercise than men' overall, whereas the chart shows mixed results depending on the age group. The overview successfully identifies the general trend that women participate in higher percentages overall except in the youngest bracket, but the selection of data could be more precise. To move to a higher level, the response would need to select and highlight the most salient features more accurately and consistently without minor misinterpretations of the overall patterns.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding point. Paragraphing is used logically to separate different age groups and comparisons. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader through the data, such as 'Furthermore' and 'However', although referencing and transitions can occasionally feel slightly mechanical. Pronoun referencing and the flow between sentences could be smoothed out to ensure a seamless progression of ideas throughout the response. To achieve a higher band, the logical relationships between sentences and paragraphs need to be managed with greater flexibility and subtlety.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

An adequate range of vocabulary is used for the task, with attempts to incorporate less common items and paraphrasing, such as 'demographs', 'physical activity', and 'male counterparts'. However, there are some word-choice and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'demographs' instead of 'demographics' and 'excercise' instead of 'exercise'. These errors do not impede communication, but they reflect a slight lack of precision in lexical control. To reach the next level, the writer should demonstrate a wider range of vocabulary with more natural collocations and fewer spelling or word-form slips when using more sophisticated terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over relative clauses and comparative structures. Some errors in grammar and punctuation are present, such as unnecessary commas ('Australia , who did exercise') and awkward phrasing like 'over sixty-five year' instead of 'those aged sixty-five and over'. However, these grammatical errors are infrequent and rarely impede communication. To progress further, the writer needs to produce a higher proportion of error-free complex sentences and refine punctuation to ensure total grammatical accuracy across all structures used.
