IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar chart compares the percentage of Austrailian women with the percentage of Austrailian men between the age group of 15 to 65 and over doing regular physical activity. The darkened columns represent the percentage of women while the lined columns present the percentage of men physically active in 2010. According to the chart, men between the age group of 45 to 54 had the maximum percentage of 53.3% which made them the most physically active group in 2010. On the other hand, the least active group turned out to be of women aged between 35 to 44 with the percentage of 39.5%. By closely looking at the trends of the bar chart, it can be evaluated that men of all age groups were more active than women except for the age group of 15 to 24, where women dominated men with the difference of 5.1% more physically active women than men. It can also be seen that in the age group of 65 and over there's a close competition between women and men with men being more active with just 0.4%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response attempts to summarise the bar chart, but it contains major factual inaccuracies regarding the data. For instance, the student states that men between 45 and 54 had the maximum percentage of 53.3% and were the most active group, whereas the chart shows that women in this age bracket (53.3%) and the 35 to 44 age bracket (52.5%) were actually the highest, and men in that group were at 43.1%. Furthermore, the student claims women dominated men in the 15 to 24 group by 5.1%, while the chart clearly indicates that men were higher (52.8%) than women (47.7%). These significant data misinterpretations mean the response only partially addresses the requirements and presents an unclear, inaccurate picture of the main trends.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical progression from an introduction to body details. Cohesive devices such as 'According to the chart', 'On the other hand', and 'By closely looking at' are used to connect ideas, though paragraphing is lacking as the entire text is written as a single block. Referencing is generally functional, but the mechanical nature of the transitions and the lack of distinct paragraphs prevent the essay from achieving a higher level of structural organisation.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task and allows the writer to communicate basic comparisons, such as 'percentage', 'regular physical activity', 'trend', and 'dominated'. However, there are notable spelling errors ('Austrailian') and minor inaccuracies in word choice and data attribution. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary items like 'physically active group' and 'close competition', but the lexical range remains somewhat limited and repetitive, which is characteristic of this band level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response shows a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, successfully employing relative clauses and participial phrases such as 'men between the age group of 45 to 54 had the maximum percentage' and 'By closely looking at the trends'. There are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as missing prepositions or incorrect modifiers, but these errors rarely impede communication, allowing the sentence structures to reach the threshold of the next band while retaining typical mid-level control.
