Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses the main parts of the task by selecting relevant data and attempting to make comparisons, earning a solid mid-level score. It provides an overview stating that women were generally more likely to participate than men. However, some key features and comparisons are under-developed or inaccurately described. For instance, the lowest point for men is misidentified in the text as aged 25 to 34 instead of 35 to 44, and several specific data points contain slight inaccuracies or confusing phrasing. While the report attempts to trace the trends across all age groups, the lack of careful verification of figures and a more thorough synthesis of the overall patterns prevents the response from achieving a higher rating.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure separating the introduction, overview, and body paragraphs for men and women. This organization allows the reader to follow the broad flow of information easily, satisfying the core requirements of the band while showing some elements of the next level through logical chunking. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty. The use of transitional phrases like 'Looking first at the figure of men' and 'Turning to female participants' helps guide the reader, but referencing is occasionally unclear, and cohesive devices are repetitive. Furthermore, the progression within paragraphs stumbles slightly due to awkward transitions between consecutive age bracket data points.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate basic trends and proportions, though it features noticeable limitations. The writer attempts less common vocabulary, such as 'proportion', 'participate', and 'decline', but these attempts are frequently accompanied by inaccuracies in word choice, form, and collocation, such as 'proprotion' and writing 'enhance to' instead of 'increases to' or 'rises to'. There are also minor spelling and slip-of-the-pen issues like 'drop' instead of 'drops' in subject-verb contexts, which do not entirely impede communication but restrict the lexical score. To progress, the student needs to expand their range of functional vocabulary to describe statistical changes with greater precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting comparative and descriptive structures. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and mechanics that persist throughout the text. Noticeable issues include tense inconsistencies, problems with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'the percentages... are at 52.8%, this figure drop'), incorrect prepositions, and missing articles (e.g., 'the lowest' or 'in the overall period'). While these errors rarely completely impede communication, they occur with enough frequency to heavily characterise the sentence structures. To move upward, the student must exercise better control over basic sentence construction, verb endings, and tense consistency when reporting past statistical data.
