Student answer (Band 5.5)
The bar graph depicts the information about propotionate of Australian male and female in various age groups who performed physical activity in 2010.
It is evident from graph that the percentage of women is higher in every age group except 15 to 24. However, in age group 65 and over both men and women were performing equally with slightest difference by 0.4%.
Initially, for age group 25-34, 42.2% male were active as compared to women who were 48.9%. However, the difference is quite well seen in age group 35-44, where percentage of men were 39.5% and women were on 52.5% which was very high.Apart from this, for age group 45-54 and 55-64,men were on 43.1% and 45.1% respectively, whereas women's percentage was 53.3% and 53% respectively.
Moving further, for age group 15-24,propotionate of men was higher as compared to women which was 47.7%. men were more physically active in this age group. However, above 65,both men and women are doing approximate same physical activity which was 46.7% and 47.1% for men and women respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses the main parts of the prompt by selecting and reporting key features of the bar chart, such as overall trends and specific age groups. An overview is attempted, noting that women generally had a higher percentage except for certain brackets. However, the first body paragraph contains a factual error regarding the chart's data, stating that women were higher in every age group except 15 to 24, whereas men were also higher in the 65 and over category (46.7% compared to 47.1% for women, which is close, but men were actually higher in the youngest group at 52.8%). Furthermore, some comparisons are under-developed or mechanically listed rather than synthesised fluently, placing the task achievement at this level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The report presents a coherent overall arrangement with a logical attempt to group data by age categories across paragraphs. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical and referencing is occasionally faulty, such as starting paragraphs with abrupt transitions like "Moving further" or "Initially" which do not always logically introduce the sequence of data. Paragraphing is present, but the internal flow within paragraphs feels disjointed due to repetitive sentence structures and clunky referencing. To improve, the student needs to ensure smoother logical links between sentences and clearer overall progression without relying on repetitive transitional phrases.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating basic figures and categories. However, there are noticeable lexical and word-form errors, such as "propotionate" instead of proportion, and awkward phrasing like "doing approximate same physical activity". The student attempts less common vocabulary, but word choice and collocation issues occasionally surface, for instance, stating that men and women were "performing equally with slightest difference". These spelling and word-choice errors do not completely impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score, and more precise academic terminology is needed for a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting comparative and dependent clauses with varying success. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ("percentage of men were"), incorrect pluralisation or agreement ("men were on 43.1% and 45.1% respectively, whereas women's percentage was... respectively"), and punctuation spacing issues around commas and periods. While these errors rarely impede overall communication, they occur regularly alongside a somewhat limited control of complex grammatical structures, keeping the performance at this level.
