IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar graph illustrates the proportion of different age groups of Australian men and women, doing physical activity regularly in the year 2010.
Overall, it is evident that between men and women, women have more percentage of daily activity in almost all age groups. In addition in female category, the age between 45-54 has the highest percentage of regular exercise, while the lowest one is from 65 and over.
In 2010, the age groups between 15-24 accounted for 52.8% and 47.7% in men and women respectively. Between 25 to 34, there is about 6% difference between male and female, where female have more percentage (48.9). Moreover, the age groups of 65 and over have almost the same percentage of regular exercise which is 46.7 for male and 47.1 for female.
The age group between 35 to 64 follows the same pattern, where female accounted more than male. Between 35 to 44, female have 52.5%, but in male there is a significant decrease (39.5%). Likewise, in age between 45 to 54 and 55 to 64, female have 53.3% and 53% respectively, where male experienced decrement in both the age groups (43.1% and 45.1%).

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by selecting and reporting the main features of the chart while making relevant comparisons. The overview captures a general trend regarding male and female activity levels, and key data points are accurately cited, such as the 15-to-24 age group figures. However, some aspects of the response are slightly underdeveloped or contain minor inaccuracies in data interpretation—for instance, claiming that women have a higher percentage of activity in 'almost all' age groups overlooks the youngest bracket (15-24) where men were higher, and the overview incorrectly refers to 'daily activity' instead of regular physical activity. To reach a higher band, the overview should be more precise and all summary statements must strictly align with the provided data without minor over-generalizations.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The text maintains a coherent overall arrangement and logical progression, moving from an introductory overview to specific age group comparisons. Paragraphing is used appropriately to group related data. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or somewhat faulty due to repetitive sentence openers and phrasing, such as the frequent use of 'Between ... to' and 'the age group between'. Reference words and cohesive links like 'Moreover' and 'Likewise' are present, but their usage occasionally feels formulaic rather than smoothly integrated. To achieve a higher level of cohesion, the writer should employ a wider variety of transitional devices and avoid relying on repetitive structural templates when introducing new data points.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying numerical data and trends using terms such as 'proportion', 'accounted for', and 'significant decrease'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary and comparative structures, but occasionally encounters lexical inaccuracies or awkward word choices, such as stating that women 'have more percentage' instead of a higher percentage, or using 'decrement' instead of 'decrease'. Spelling and word-choice errors are minor and do not impede communication. To improve this criterion toward a higher band, the student should focus on more precise lexical collocations and natural phrasing when discussing statistical data.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, effectively incorporating relative clauses and comparative structures. There are some grammar and punctuation errors present, such as missing articles ('in female category', 'in male') and prepositional inaccuracies like 'in age between 45 to 54', but these errors occur infrequently and rarely impede communication. The majority of the sentences are clear and understandable. To move into a higher band, the writer needs to exercise tighter control over grammatical constraints, particularly article usage and prepositions, while expanding the variety of error-free complex sentence patterns.
