Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt only partially, attempting to present an overview and select some key features of the bar chart, but the information is often inaccurate or poorly supported. For instance, the general overview incorrectly claims that females are most active among all age groups compared to males, whereas the chart shows that younger males aged 15 to 24 actually have a higher participation rate than females in that same bracket. Furthermore, some data points are misreported or confusingly described, such as referring to people aged 15 to 24 as 'children above 15'. The reporting lacks a clear, consistent focus on the most striking trends and contains unsupported generalisations.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation evident in the division into paragraphs, but the response lacks a clear overall progression. Ideas are frequently repeated across different paragraphs without advancing the description of the data. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and sometimes inaccurately, such as the repetitive use of 'as compared to' and 'moreover'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal logical flow within paragraphs is disjointed, and referencing between ideas is not always clear, making it difficult for the reader to follow a logical development of information.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task, with noticeable errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. There are issues with word choice and collocation, such as stating that older people 'were stood at the same level' rather than remaining stable or showing similar participation rates. Other phrases like 'Female of middle age' demonstrate awkward phrasing and lexical control. While some topic-related vocabulary is present, attempts at more precise language or less common items lead to inaccuracies that restrict the overall clarity and precision of the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on basic sentence forms with frequent errors. Attempts at complex comparisons result in faulty structures and grammatical inaccuracies, such as subject-verb agreement errors ('Female are most active', 'people... were stood'). There are also recurring issues with singular and plural forms, missing articles, and prepositional usage within comparative patterns. These frequent errors distract the reader and can occasionally cause confusion regarding the intended meaning of the statistical comparisons.
