Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses the task only partially. While the student attempts to summarise the bar chart depicting Australian men and women doing regular physical activity in 2010, the presentation of information is confusing and lacks clarity. The overview provided in the second paragraph is muddled and fails to capture the main trends accurately, stating that females remained the dominant category throughout while males accounted for the smallest figure, which does not properly reflect the fluctuating age data shown in the chart. Furthermore, key features and comparisons are poorly selected and under-developed, with inaccurate descriptions of data points and relationships between groups.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response shows some basic organisation with an attempt at paragraphing, but there is no clear overall progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are either inadequate, inaccurate, or overused, leading to a disjointed reading experience. Transitional phrases like 'To commence', 'Moving ahead', and 'turnig to remaing catergory' are mechanically applied rather than used to logically guide the reader through the data. Additionally, referencing is unclear in places, and sentences often run together without proper logical sequencing between data points.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical resource is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts some topic-specific vocabulary such as 'proportion', 'category', and 'figure', but there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'illustrate' instead of illustrates, 'activtyin', 'lokking', 'bettween', 'camparision', 'registed', 'thanthe', 'caterioes', 'turnig', and 'remaing'. These numerous errors cause some difficulty for the reader and highlight a lack of control over basic academic vocabulary and accurate spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response exhibits a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent attempts at complex or comparative structures that are faulty. There are persistent errors in grammar, punctuation, and omission of necessary verbs and articles. For example, the opening sentence lacks a main verb structure ('The bar chart illustrate the proportion males and females...'), and punctuation is largely absent, such as missing periods and commas between clauses. Frequent errors in subject-verb agreement and prepositions cause strain and can impede communication for the reader.
