Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response attempts to address the prompt by summarising the data from the bar chart, and key features such as the overall higher percentages for women in certain age groups (e.g. 35 to 44) are identified. However, the coverage of data is incomplete and contains several inaccuracies. For instance, the student misinterprets the figures for the 45 to 54 and 55 to 64 age groups, stating that 'female were at 53-53.3%' and 'male were at 45.1% and 43.1%', yet misses a clear overview of the general trends across the lifespan. The introduction and overall statement are somewhat vague and repetitive, indicating that the task is only partially addressed. To improve, you should ensure that all major data points are accurately reported without misreadings and provide a clearer, more precise summary of the overall trends.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure and is divided into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the general flow of information. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'However', and 'Finally' are used to link different sections of the report. However, referencing and transitions are at times mechanical or faulty, such as 'In the age group of 15 to 24, the average percentage of Australian male were 52.8% who did there physical activity.' The overall arrangement is coherent, but the logical progression between sentences occasionally falters due to repetitive phrasing and awkward transitions. To reach the next level, you should use a wider variety of cohesive devices more naturally and ensure that each paragraph builds smoothly on the previous one.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with attempts to use topic-specific terms like 'percentage', 'age group', and 'physical activity'. However, the range of vocabulary is limited, and there are noticeable errors in word choice, form, and spelling throughout the text, such as 'in constract' instead of 'in contrast', 'littile' instead of 'little', and 'there' instead of 'their'. Additionally, expressions like 'at lower position' or '65 and plus' sound unnatural. These errors and the restricted range of lexical items mean that communication is occasionally affected. To improve, focus on expanding your vocabulary of synonyms and reporting verbs, and carefully proofread your work to eliminate spelling and word-choice mistakes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting comparative structures and relative clauses. However, there is a limited range of grammatical structures overall, and frequent errors persist. Examples of grammatical and agreement errors include 'the percentage of Australian male were' (plural/singular mismatch), 'the percentage of women were higher' (subject-verb agreement), and awkward punctuation and phrasing like 'in the age of groups between 15 to 65 and above in the specific year by 2010.' These frequent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher band, you need to demonstrate better control over subject-verb agreement, plurals, and prepositional phrases while incorporating a wider variety of accurate complex sentence structures.
