Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons across the age groups. An overview is present, noting that women were generally more active than men except in the youngest category. The data is accurately cited for the most part, pointing out the peak for women aged 45 to 54 and the highest figure for men in the 15 to 24 group. However, some parts of the data description are slightly repetitive or underdeveloped in how they synthesize the trends, sitting comfortably at the halfway mark between meeting core requirements and fully extending the analysis.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression from an introductory paraphrase and overview into body paragraphs detailing specific age groups. Paragraphing is used to group data logically. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For instance, run-on structures occur, such as writing 'compared with 47.7 of women, this pattern changed', which creates comma splices and affects the smooth flow of ideas. Referencing and transitional phrases could be managed more flexibly to elevate the logical transitions between sentences.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully employing terms related to data reporting such as 'percentage', 'decrease', 'increase', and 'figure'. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, but these are accompanied by word choice and word form errors, such as 'group female participants', 'men group', and awkward phrasing like '43.1 percentage of men were physically active'. Spelling is generally acceptable, but lexical control lacks precision, preventing the score from reaching a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting comparative and dependent clauses. However, there are noticeable errors in grammar and punctuation throughout. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues like 'The bar chart illustrate', missing plural nouns or prepositions in phrases like 'in age groups' and 'For those aged groups, 35 to 44', and punctuation errors such as comma splices linking independent clauses. While these errors rarely impede overall communication, they prevent the sentence structures from achieving consistent accuracy.
