Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the chart’s subject and include several accurate figures, such as 52.8% for men and 47.7% for women aged 15–24, and 46.7% versus 47.1% among those aged 65 and over. However, the overview is unclear and partly inaccurate: women’s participation did not rise steadily, since it peaked at 53.3% among 45–54-year-olds before falling. The claim that the male figure “fluctuated” is broadly true, but the main pattern—that men were higher only in the youngest group, while women led in every other group—is not clearly stated. Some comparisons are also vague: “increased by 5%” does not specify the female figure of 48.9%, and the middle age groups are not reported precisely. Select and explain the key trends more clearly.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs covering the age groups in sequence. This gives the reader a basic route through the information, and phrases such as “To begin with” and “Turning towards the remaining details” signal transitions. However, the progression is weakened by vague references, particularly “The percentage of 35 to 44 and 45 to 54 age groups… depicts the similar trend,” which does not explain what the trend is. Repeated sentence patterns also make the report feel mechanical, while “increased by 5%” leaves the comparison unclear. Group the figures around meaningful contrasts and use clear references to the male and female rates to make the links between sentences more effective.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “proportion,” “percentage,” “age group,” and “illustrated,” and you attempt to vary wording rather than relying on one term throughout. However, the range is limited and several word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors make parts difficult to understand. Examples include “regular exercises,” “male ecercise,” “flucuated,” and “the proportion of 25 to 34 age group individuals represented men.” Some expressions, such as “women was increased by 5%,” do not accurately describe the data. Aim for precise chart language and check spelling carefully; terms such as “participation rate,” “stood at,” and “was higher than” would help you report comparisons more naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple statements and longer structures, including an overview beginning “Overall” and comparisons joined with “while.” However, the range is limited, and errors in sentence construction and verb forms frequently make the meaning difficult to follow. For example, “who's did regular exercise” uses an incorrect relative clause and verb form, while “the percentage … men was 52.8%” lacks a clear grammatical relationship between the age group and the figure. In “women was increased by 5%,” the passive construction is unsuitable for describing a rate. Build sentences around clear subjects and verbs—for example, “The rate for women stood at 48.9%, compared with 42.2% for men”—and check agreement, articles, and clause structure.
