Student answer (Band 5.0)

The bar chart illustrates the proportion of exercise of male and female who belong to different age groups in Australia in the year 2010.

Overall, the percentage is increasing in female in the older age, while in female it is opposite, decreasing physical activity from younger to older.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the chart’s subject and make relevant comparisons between the sexes, including the male peak of 52.8% among 15–24-year-olds and the female peak of 53.3% among 45–54-year-olds. However, the overview is unclear and partly inaccurate: female activity does not simply increase with age, and male activity does not steadily decrease; both series change direction. Several details are also misreported, including the female figure for ages 35–44 (52.5%, not 52.2%), the age range for the female peak (45–54, not 45–53), and the 25–34 female figure (48.9%, not “489%”). The response includes many figures but does not clearly summarise the main overall pattern. State the contrasting trends accurately, then select a few reliable comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate detail sections for women and men. This gives the reader some organisation, and phrases such as “Moreover” and “On the other hand” signal relationships between points. However, progression is weakened by the inaccurate, confusing overview and by comparisons that are difficult to follow, such as “senior citizen 65 to over had 46.7% less than female age group.” Some linking words are used mechanically or do not clearly connect the ideas, while the final male paragraph lists figures without a consistent comparison pattern. Organise the details by sex or by age-group trends, and use clear references such as “the corresponding female figure” to make comparisons easier to track.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “proportion,” “percentage,” “age group,” and “physical activity,” and you attempt to vary expressions with “highest” and “lowest.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, sometimes making the meaning unclear. For example, “percentage of exercise of male and female” is unnatural, “maximum weighted” does not describe a chart value, and “citizen group” is not an appropriate label for the oldest age category. There is also a consequential number-format error in “489%,” which should be written as 48.9%. Use standard chart language such as “the proportion of men and women who exercised regularly,” “recorded,” and “the oldest age group,” and check that figures are transcribed accurately.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mixture of simple statements and longer sentences with contrast, for example, “However, in youngest group…” and “Meanwhile, 25 to 34…”. Nevertheless, sentence structures are often incomplete or faulty, and errors frequently make relationships between figures harder to understand. Examples include “the highest physical activity shown by female,” which lacks a clear finite verb, and “25 to 34 had 489%,” where the age group is treated as the subject without a clear reference to women. There are also problems with articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries, as in “in youngest group” and the lower-case start of “on the other hand.” Practise complete subject–verb sentences and use consistent past-tense reporting, while checking articles and punctuation.
