Student answer (Band 5.5)

The given bar graph illustrates the imformation about ratio of Australian males and females in diffrent age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010. The data has been calibrated into percentage.

Looking from an overall perspectives, it is evident that the percentage of males were highest under age group 15 to 24.However, the percentage of females were highest under age group 45 to 54.

At a fleeting glance, the percentage of females were lowest under age 65 and over which is accounted as 47.1. Moreover, the lowest percentage of males were under 35 to 44 age group which is noted as 39.5.

Moving further, all men and women did not surpass by 54 in all age categories which was accounted as 53.3. Apart from this, the percentage of men were higest in the young age category only after that the percentage of men were decreased in all age groups and at the end the percentage were stable in male and females under the age group 65 and over which is noted as 46.7% and 47.1%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify several relevant features, including the male peak among 15–24-year-olds and the male low among 35–44-year-olds, and you include some accurate figures. However, the overview is incomplete and one key comparison is inaccurate: women’s highest rate was 53.3% for ages 45–54, but it was almost the same for ages 55–64 (53.0%) and 35–44 (52.5%). The claim that male activity “decreased in all age groups” is also misleading: it falls to 35–44, then rises in each older group. The statement that rates did not surpass 54% is true but not a useful main feature. Select the major gender pattern and describe the changes across age groups more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and further details, so the reader can identify the topic and some comparisons. However, progression is not consistently clear. The overview and the following paragraph repeat the highest and lowest figures, while the final paragraph combines an unclear generalisation, a trend, and the closing-age comparison. Linking phrases such as “At a fleeting glance,” “Moreover,” and “Moving further” are either unnatural or do not clearly show how the next point relates to the previous one. Organise the body around a clear contrast—for example, male trends first and female trends second—and use straightforward links such as “By contrast” and “In the older groups.”

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “percentage,” “age group,” and “physical activity,” and attempt more formal expressions. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or awkward, which sometimes makes the meaning difficult to follow. “Ratio” is not the right term for the chart’s percentages, and “the data has been calibrated into percentage” does not naturally describe the information. Phrases such as “at a fleeting glance” and “did not surpass by 54” are also unsuitable in this context. Spelling errors, including “imformation,” “diffrent,” and “higest,” further reduce accuracy. Prefer precise, familiar chart language and check spelling before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including a sentence beginning “Apart from this,” but control is inconsistent. Agreement errors recur: “the percentage of males were” should be “the percentage of males was,” and “the percentage of men were decreased” needs a different construction, such as “the percentage for men decreased.” The sentence “all men and women did not surpass by 54” is grammatically unclear, and the final sentence has an awkward structure that obscures the comparison. Punctuation also needs attention: there is no space after the full stop in “15 to 24.However,” and extra spaces appear elsewhere. Build accurate short comparison sentences first, then combine them using controlled clauses.
