Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response makes a relevant start by identifying the chart’s subject and reporting two figures for the youngest age group: 52.8% for men and 47.7% for women. However, it does not summarise the chart as a whole: there is no overview of the main trends, no comparison across the other age groups, and no account of how the figures change. The reference to “24 year old people” also misidentifies the chart category, which is 15 to 24, rather than a single age. The response is substantially below the required 150 words, leaving the task only minimally addressed. To improve, include an overview and select key comparisons across all age groups, using accurate category labels.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5
There is a basic sequence: the opening introduces the chart, followed by an attempt to describe the first age group. The phrase “on the other hand” signals a comparison, so there is some awareness of how to connect information. However, the response ends before developing that comparison or moving through the remaining categories, and it has no clear paragraph structure or overall progression. The link between “15 year old” and “24 year old people” is also unclear because the chart groups these ages together. Organise the response into an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph comparing the data, using clear references to each age group and linking comparisons consistently.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses a small set of relevant terms, including “percentage,” “age group,” and “physical” activity, and the reader can recognise the general topic. However, the vocabulary is limited and several choices or forms are inaccurate: “multiples age categorys” is not a natural way to describe the groups, while “physical excersise” contains a spelling error and is less suitable than the chart’s wording, “physical activity.” “Australian man” should refer to “Australian men.” These errors make the description less precise, although its basic meaning remains understandable. Build a reliable set of chart-description phrases, such as “age groups,” “the proportion of men,” and “regular physical activity,” and check spelling and plural forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts both a longer introductory sentence and a comparison, and the basic message is partly understandable. However, grammatical control is limited. In “The bar chart below indicate,” the singular subject requires “indicates”; “The chart starting with” lacks a finite verb; and “The percentage is 52.8 and the other hand…” does not form a complete, correctly connected comparison. The sentence patterns are mostly simple or incomplete, with little variety, and errors sometimes make relationships between the figures difficult to follow. Practise complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and use accurate comparison structures, for example, “Among people aged 15 to 24, the figure for men was 52.8%, compared with 47.7% for women.”
