Student answer (Band 5.0)

The Chart is featuring percentage of men and women doing regular physical activity in 2010. Both were representing different age group ranging to 15 to 65 and over. Men from age group of 15 to 24 seemed to be enthusiastic as 52.8% of all time highest participated in physical activities where as only 47.7% of women participated with that age bracket. Men with the age range of 25 to 34 participated only 42.2% but women of this age range participated approximately similar to the previous age range that is 48.9%. The women of age bracket 35 to 44 and 45 to 55 seemed to participate probably equally, likewise 52.5 and 53.3 but men of these age ranges are likely to participate less than women as they fall at 39.5 and 43.1% . Women of age 55 to 64 appeared similar to previous group whereas men appreared approximately aimilar to 65 and over. Women of thsi age range fall the same percentage as 15 to 24.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the chart’s subject and report several relevant figures, including the male peak of 52.8% among 15–24-year-olds and the female figures of 52.5% and 53.3% for the middle age groups. However, the response gives no clear overall summary of the main pattern, and some comparisons are incomplete or inaccurate. For example, it does not state that women exceed men in every age group except 15–24, or that female activity peaks around ages 35–64. The final comparison is also unclear: women aged 65 and over recorded 47.1%, not the same percentage as women aged 15–24 (47.7%). Select the key trends and compare them explicitly rather than describing groups one by one without a clear overview.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response follows the age groups in chart order, which gives it some basic organisation, and comparison words such as “whereas” and “likewise” show an attempt to connect information. However, it is presented as one long paragraph, with no distinct overview or clear grouping of the main trends. Several links are difficult to follow: “Women of age 55 to 64 appeared similar to previous group whereas men appreared approximately aimilar to 65 and over” does not make the comparison clear, and the final sentence’s reference to “this age range” is ambiguous. Organise the response into an introduction, an overview, and focused detail paragraphs, and make each comparison’s subject explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of chart-related vocabulary, including “percentage,” “age bracket,” “participated,” and “approximately,” so the reader can generally understand the topic. There are also attempts at more descriptive wording, such as “enthusiastic,” although this is not a precise way to describe a participation rate. Some word choices and collocations are awkward, including “all time highest participated,” “fall the same percentage,” and “appeared similar to previous group.” Spelling slips such as “appreared,” “aimilar,” and “thsi” also reduce accuracy. Use neutral, precise language for data reporting, such as “recorded the highest rate” and “was almost unchanged,” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt some longer sentences and use contrast clauses, for example, “Men with the age range of 25 to 34 participated only 42.2% but women … participated approximately similar.” This shows an effort to connect comparisons, but sentence structures are often faulty, and errors sometimes make relationships unclear. Examples include “Both were representing different age group,” where the verb form and singular/plural agreement are problematic, and “Women of age bracket 35 to 44 and 45 to 55 seemed to participate probably equally,” which has an unclear construction. Articles and prepositions are also often missing or inaccurate. Practise building clear comparative sentences with accurate past-tense verbs and consistent plural forms, then punctuate longer sentences so each comparison is easy to follow.
