IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar graph displays the proportion of Australian males and females in disparate age groups who exercised everyday in 2010.

Overall, it is clear that women generally did less exercise than men. A large number of young people did the physical exercise as compared to the other age groups. Whereas, older people recorded the lowest proportion of bodily exercise.

To begin with, people aged from 15 to 24 did more exercise across the all age groups. Younger men did 52.8% and females ratio was at 47.7% lesser than mens. However, adults groups of age 25-34, 48.9% females engaged in physical activity, compared with 42.2% mens. For adults people of age 35-44, the figure stood at 39.5 for males, while females accounted for 52.5.

Following that, the similar pattern was observed among the people aged 45-54, with 53.3 for females and 43.1 for males. Furthermore, the figure for women and men was approximately at the same proportion around 53% and 45.1% respectively. Older males and females did the exercise in the similar ratio that is 46.7% for men and 47.1% for women.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You include an introduction, an overview and comparisons across the age groups, and most of the figures you report match the chart. However, the overview misstates the main pattern: women were more active than men in every group except 15–24, rather than generally doing less. The claim that older people recorded the lowest proportion is also too broad; the lowest figure is for men aged 35–44, while women’s rates peak among those aged 45–54. Some comparisons are reported accurately, such as 42.2% for men versus 48.9% for women aged 25–34, but the key trends need clearer selection and interpretation. A more precise overview and fuller explanation of the contrasting male and female patterns would make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs presenting age-group comparisons. Phrases such as “To begin with” and “Furthermore” help signal progression, and the reader can generally follow the figures. However, some linking is mechanical or awkward, particularly “Following that, the similar pattern was observed,” and “Whereas” begins a fragment rather than a complete contrast. The sequence also moves through the age groups without consistently highlighting the main comparisons, and “the figure” is sometimes unclear as to whether it refers to men or women. Grouping the data around the contrasting trends—men’s low point and women’s higher middle-age rates—would strengthen progression and referencing.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “recorded,” “accounted for,” and “physical activity,” and the meaning is usually understandable. There are, however, several inaccurate or unnatural choices that reduce precision. “Exercised everyday” suggests daily exercise, which the chart does not specify; “disparate age groups” is also an awkward way to describe the categories. Phrases such as “females ratio,” “mens,” and “did the exercise” show problems with word form, collocation, or spelling. Aim for consistent, natural terms such as “men and women,” “the percentage who were physically active,” and “participated in regular physical activity.” This would make the description more precise and appropriately formal.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including comparisons with “while” and “compared with,” and most of the data remains understandable. Some grammatical errors nevertheless affect clarity. For example, “A large number of young people did the physical exercise” is followed by the incomplete contrast “Whereas, older people recorded…”. In “Younger men did 52.8% and females ratio was at 47.7% lesser than mens,” the comparison is not formed grammatically. Other issues include “across the all age groups,” “adults groups of age,” and missing articles or plural forms in “the similar ratio.” Use complete sentences, check article and plural agreement, and construct comparisons with parallel forms, such as “the figure for men was…, compared with… for women.”
