IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given chart illustrates the proportion of australian men and women belonging to various age groups who regularly participate in physical activities in 2010.
Overall, the trend of working out continously decreases till the age of 44 in men before rising again whereas regular physical activities in women appear to increase before steeping down at the age of 54. Another noticable feature is that young men (aged 15 to 24) tend to work the most while women aged 45 to 54 are the most physically active.
The largest share of men doing physical labour are aged 15 to 24 accounting for 52.8%. This number decreases by approximately 13% by the age of 35 to 44 adding about 39.5%. The bar chart starts to steep up again with men aged 45 to 54 adding a share of 43.1%. Eventually, it reaches to 46.7% in men aged 65 over.
Young women (ages 15 to 24) on the other hand, contributes to 47.7%. This number gradually rises to the maximum of 53.3% at the age of 45 to 54 before lowering to 47.1 which holds the minimum contribution.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main contrast accurately: men peak in the youngest group, while women reach their highest level at ages 45–54, and you report several correct figures. The overview also captures the broad male decline and recovery. However, some details are incomplete or imprecise. For example, women’s activity rises from 47.7% to 53.3%, but then falls through 53.0% to 47.1%; describing this only as lowering leaves out the intermediate age group. The claim that 47.1% is the “minimum contribution” is also unclear, since the female minimum is 47.7% among 15–24-year-olds. Include the key middle values and make the final comparison precise to cover the data more fully.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is arranged in a clear sequence: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for men and women. This makes the two series easy to follow, and transitions such as “on the other hand” help signal the comparison. The overview gives the reader a useful map of the main trends. Some linking and reference choices are less clear, however. In “This number decreases … adding about 39.5%,” the relationship between the decrease and the figure is awkward, while “This number” is repeated without always making the comparison explicit. The final paragraph also omits the female figures for ages 25–44 and 55–64, interrupting the otherwise orderly progression. Use clearer references and report the age groups in sequence.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing a chart, including “proportion,” “accounting for,” “gradually rises,” and “maximum.” These choices generally communicate the trends, and the response remains understandable. Some attempted expressions are inaccurate or unnatural for this data, though. “Physical labour” suggests work rather than exercise, and “the bar chart starts to steep up” is not a natural way to describe an increase. “Contribution” is also unsuitable for a percentage of people exercising, and spelling errors such as “continously” and “noticable” reduce accuracy. Prefer precise chart language such as “participation rate,” “rose,” and “fell,” and check spelling and collocations before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use both simple statements and more complex structures, including the overview clause “before rising again” and the comparison introduced by “whereas.” Most of the meaning is clear, but some grammatical errors remain. In “Young women … contributes,” the plural subject requires “contribute”; “aged 65 over” needs “aged 65 and over”; and “lowering to 47.1” is missing the percent sign or a noun such as “percent.” The phrase “decreases … adding about 39.5%” also creates an unclear grammatical relationship between the change and the resulting figure. Review subject–verb agreement, complete age-group phrases, and sentence construction around numerical comparisons to improve control.
