IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The bar chart represents the percentage of Australian men and women involved in daily physical activites across six age categories between 15 to over 65 in the year 2010.
Overall, females generally have higher participation rates in regular physical activites then males across most age groups, except the youngest category. Additionally, physical activity levels for men declined as they grow up before recovering slightly, whereas female participation showed a steady increase up to the middle age group before slightly moving downwards.
Looking at the details, men had highest activity level in the age of 15 to 24 at 52.8%, which was higher than female at 47.7% in the youngest group. Participation of the females in the daily activites grew consistently with the age, reaching 53.3% in the 45 to 54. Although the participation declined slightly in the older age groups, it remained high at 53% for the women aged 55 to 64 and 47.1% for those aged 65 and over, outperforming the men in nearly every category from 25 onwards.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response selects the main patterns accurately: men record the highest rate in the youngest group, while women exceed men in every group from 25 onwards, and female activity peaks in middle age before falling. The overview also captures the broad contrast between the sexes and the male decline followed by a recovery. Relevant figures, including 52.8%, 47.7%, 53.3% and 53%, support these points. To make the account more complete and precise, include the male figures for the remaining age groups and explicitly identify the male low of 39.5% at ages 35–44. Also, “declined as they grow up” over-generalises the male pattern: the rate rises after 35–44. The description addresses the task clearly, with some scope to develop the comparisons further.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised into a clear introduction, an overview and a detail paragraph, and the information progresses logically from the overall trends to specific figures. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Additionally,” “Although” and “whereas” help signal comparison and contrast. The final comparison that women outperform men “from 25 onwards” gives the paragraph a useful concluding point. Cohesion is generally effective, though the detail paragraph focuses heavily on female figures after briefly describing the youngest group; adding the male values for the other age bands would create a more balanced progression. Some repeated references to “participation” and “activity” could also be varied or made more concise.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The response uses a suitable range of task-related vocabulary, including “participation rates,” “declined,” “recovering,” “consistently” and “outperforming.” These choices communicate the main trends clearly, and the language is generally appropriate for describing a chart. However, several word-choice and collocation issues limit precision: “daily physical activities” does not match the chart’s measure of regular activity, “involved in” is less natural here than “engaged in,” and “in the age of 15 to 24” is awkward. There are also spelling errors in “activites” and “then” where “than” is intended. Greater accuracy with collocations and careful proofreading would make the vocabulary more controlled and flexible.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
There is a useful mix of sentence forms, including a complex overview sentence with “whereas” and a concession clause beginning “Although.” Most sentences are understandable, and the figures and comparisons are presented in clear grammatical structures. Some errors remain, however. In “females generally have higher participation rates … then males,” the comparison requires “than”; “as they grow up” shifts tense and is not well suited to describing a fixed year; and “men had highest activity level” needs an article (“the highest activity level”). The phrase “higher than female” also needs a plural noun or a clearer comparison, such as “higher than the rate for females.” Correcting these patterns would improve accuracy while retaining the existing range.
