Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar chart illustrates the proportion of men and women from Australia in different age groups who did regular physical exercise in 2010.
Overall, men started regular physical activity in their early age. However the percentage declined over the time. By contrast, women started doing physical activity in adult age and the proportion increased thought the year.
From 15 to 24 age group, men highly engaged in physical exercise, at 52.8% while 47.7% of women joined physical activity in 2010. After that, the age groups such as 25 to 34 and 35 to 44, male participation in physical activity declined and female participation gradually increased, for male the proportion was 42.2% and 39.5%, for female the proportion was 48.9% and 52.5% respectively.
Among 45 to 54 age groups, female participation recorded highest, at 53.3%, by contrast male participation was lowest comparing to other age groups, at 43.1%. However, in age groups of 55 to 64 and 65 and over, female participation went down, at 53% and 47.1%, but still the parcentages were higher than male participation, at 45.1% and 46.7%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You select the main comparisons and report most figures accurately, including the male peak of 52.8% among 15–24-year-olds, the female high of 53.3% among 45–54-year-olds, and the later female figures. The overview also recognises that women’s rates are generally higher after the youngest group. However, it mischaracterises the chart as showing when people “started” exercising: it records participation by age group, not when individuals began. The claim that men’s percentage “declined over the time” is also too broad, since it rises from 39.5% to 46.7% after age 35–44. The key features are present, but a more precise overview of the contrasting age patterns and the overall gender comparison would make the summary more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear four-paragraph structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs presenting the figures. The age groups are generally discussed in sequence, and contrasts such as “By contrast” and “However” help guide the reader. This gives the report a coherent overall arrangement. Some linking is mechanical or unclear, though. In the overview, “started … in their early age” and “increased thought the year” do not express the intended comparison clearly. The long sentence beginning “After that, the age groups…” also combines several figures and comparisons without a clean structure. Use shorter, parallel comparisons and connect each age group directly to its male and female values to improve progression and cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “proportion,” “participation,” “declined,” and “recorded highest,” and the meaning is generally understandable. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or repetitive, which limits precision: people do not “start” activity in an age group, and “joined physical activity” is unnatural in this context. “Increased thought the year” appears to mean “increased through the age groups,” while “parcentages” is a spelling error. The repeated use of “physical activity” and “participation” also makes the description less flexible. Aim for accurate, natural phrases such as “the proportion who exercised regularly” and “the rate rose,” and check spelling before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, and several sentences communicate the figures clearly, such as “From 15 to 24 age group, men highly engaged … while 47.7% of women…” However, some grammatical errors remain. “Men started regular physical activity” and “women started doing physical activity” use an unsuitable verb construction for describing chart data; “the proportion increased” would fit. The overview’s “increased thought the year” also has an incorrect form, and “Among 45 to 54 age groups” has a faulty age-group construction. In the final paragraph, “female participation recorded highest” lacks an article or suitable verb phrase. Improve control of articles, sentence patterns, and parallel phrasing while retaining your attempts at complex comparisons.
