IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The chart compares the percentage of Australian men and women of different ages who regularly get themselves involoved in pysical activity in 2010.
Overall, the most noticeable feature is that women held at the highest percentage while men accounted for the lowest percentage.
Looking more closely to the chart, it is evident that between the age groups of 15 to 24 and 35 to 44years, the percentage of the australian men involoved in physicial activity followed a significant decline from 52.8% to 39.5% respectively. In contrast, the corresponding figures for the females rose gradually from 47.7% to 52.5%.
Meanwhile, it is completely opposite to the trend that it experienced between the age groups 45 to 54 years and people over 65 years. Surprisingly, the percentage of male witnessed a marginal rise from 43.1% to 46.7% while the percentage of women followed a downward trend and fell from 53.3% to 47.1% respectively. Therefore, men between the age of 35 to 40 years were least involved in physical activity whereas women between 45 to 54 years held at the highest percentage.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the chart’s subject and report several accurate comparisons, including the male decline from 52.8% to 39.5% and the female rise from 47.7% to 52.5%. You also note the later male increase and female decrease. However, the overview is unclear: “women held at the highest percentage while men accounted for the lowest” does not specify that women led in most age groups, while men were higher only among 15–24-year-olds. Some key details are omitted, particularly the crossover after the youngest group and the female figures’ peak around ages 45–64. The final reference to men aged “35 to 40” is inaccurate; the chart’s group is 35–44. Make the overview more precise and compare the full age-group pattern.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing trends. The progression from younger to older age groups is generally easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “In contrast” and “Meanwhile” help signal comparisons. This coherent arrangement is a strength. However, some connections are not fully clear. “It is completely opposite to the trend that it experienced” has an unclear reference, and “Therefore” introduces a conclusion that does not follow cleanly from the preceding comparison. The overview also does not prepare the reader for the detailed pattern. Use more precise references and organise the body around the main contrast—for example, men’s initial lead versus women’s higher rates in the remaining groups.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a reasonable range of task-related language, including “significant decline,” “rose gradually,” “marginal rise,” and “downward trend,” which helps describe changes. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “held at the highest percentage,” “accounted for the lowest percentage,” and “get themselves involved in physical activity.” Spelling errors in “involoved,” “pysical,” “physicial,” and “australian” are noticeable and reduce precision. Prefer straightforward chart language such as “recorded the highest proportion,” “had the lowest rate,” and “participated in regular physical activity.” Aim for accurate, natural phrasing rather than adding elaborate expressions; this will make the comparisons clearer and more appropriate to an academic report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “while” and “whereas,” and most of the main comparisons remain understandable. Some grammatical errors persist, however. In “between the age groups of 15 to 24 and 35 to 44years,” the age-range construction and spacing are faulty; “between ages 15–24 and 35–44” would be clearer. “The percentage of male witnessed” lacks an appropriate determiner and uses an awkward singular construction; write “the percentage of men rose.” The sentence beginning “Meanwhile, it is completely opposite…” also has an unclear pronoun reference and an incomplete comparison pattern. Check articles, plural forms, and sentence references, while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
