Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the chart’s subject and include several relevant comparisons, including men’s peak of 52.8% among 15–24-year-olds and women’s peak of 53.3% among 45–54-year-olds. However, the overview is not accurate: women did not rise consistently across the age groups, since their rate falls after 45–54, and men’s rate also changes direction rather than simply declining. The response also says men’s rate fell over the “following 2 years,” although the chart compares age groups, not years. A clearer summary would state the main overall pattern: men lead only in the youngest group, while women lead in all the others, with the gap narrowest among those aged 65 and over. This would make the key features more fully and accurately reported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic paragraph structure, moving from an introduction and overview to details about the two sexes. Some linking expressions, such as “Overall” and “On the other hand,” help signal the direction of the discussion. However, progression is weakened by repetition: the final paragraph repeats the male starting figure and later rise already mentioned in the previous paragraph. The long third paragraph combines several comparisons in one sentence, making relationships between points difficult to follow. “Meanwhile” and “as” are also used in ways that do not clearly connect the ideas. Organise the body by comparing both sexes within age groups, and use shorter sentences with clear references to the age categories.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “percentage,” “age group,” “highest,” and “steady rise,” so the reader can generally understand the intended comparisons. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unsuitable for describing this chart. “Pursive physical activities” is unclear, “on a daily basis” adds a detail not shown, and “women’s take over” is not a natural way to describe the figures. “Dramatic fall” overstates the change, while “dominating start” is informal and imprecise. Spelling errors such as “illustates,” “consistenly,” and “follwing” also reduce control. Prefer precise chart language such as “participated in regular physical activity,” “declined,” and “was higher than.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
There are attempts to use complex sentences, for example, “as the age group progresses the women's take over,” but sentence control is inconsistent and errors sometimes make the meaning difficult to follow. The opening has faulty structure (“The Bar chart illustates the Percentage…”), and the overview begins with a comma splice after “Overall.” In the body, “Men had the the highest percentage” contains a repeated article, while “the men and women groups where” has incorrect agreement and verb form. Several sentences run on without clear punctuation, particularly the long comparison beginning “Men had the the highest percentage.” Use a consistent past-tense reporting style, check subject–verb agreement, and divide complex comparisons into complete sentences.
