IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The given chart compares the proportion of Australian male and female in six age groups who did physical exercise consistently during 2010.
Overall, men teenagers doing physical exercise were high as compare to that of same age of female. In contrast, female with above 25 of their age stayed the high until 64 of that of their same age of men with a peak of 53.3% in age 45 to 54.
Men doing physical activity are high in their younger age with the figure of 52.8%, the only biggest ratio in all categories of men that of the equal age of female (47.7%). However, this figure of men decreased dramatically to 39.5% at the age of 35 to 45, the smallest value of men in terms of exercise in all groups before increasing slightly.
Women doing physical exercise were always at the top of all ages groups with a peak of 53.3% in middle age groups except

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the chart’s subject and give a broad overview: men have their highest figure among the youngest group, while women lead in most older groups and peak at 53.3%. You also report several accurate figures, including 52.8% for young men and the male low of 39.5%. However, the response only partly covers the data. The final sentence is unfinished (“except”), and the claim that women were “always at the top” conflicts with the 15–24 group, where men lead. The overview also says women lead until age 64, but does not clearly distinguish the 65-and-over group, where women still lead by only 0.4 points. Select the main comparisons accurately and complete the account of the trends.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic structure, moving from an introduction and overview to separate comments on men and women. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “In contrast,” and “However” help signal relationships between points. Nevertheless, progression is limited: the overview repeats ideas that appear in the detail paragraphs, and the final paragraph stops abruptly at “except,” leaving the discussion incomplete. Some references are also difficult to follow, particularly “that of their same age of men,” where the comparison is unclear. Organise the body around the main contrast—men’s decline and recovery versus women’s rise and later fall—and use clear age-group references to connect each figure.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant task vocabulary, including “proportion,” “peak,” “decreased,” and “increasing,” and the reader can generally identify the topic and trends. However, the range is limited and several word combinations are unnatural or imprecise, such as “men teenagers doing physical exercise were high,” “stayed the high,” and “the only biggest ratio.” “Physical exercise” is also repeated frequently, and “consistently” does not clearly express the chart’s idea of regular activity. These choices sometimes make comparisons harder to understand. Use standard chart language and vary it carefully—for example, describe percentages as “stood at,” “fell to,” or “rose to,” and refer to “men” and “women” rather than “male and female” as nouns.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt a range of sentence forms, including a contrast in “However, this figure … decreased … before increasing slightly,” and the main numerical statements are often understandable. However, errors are frequent and sometimes obscure the intended comparison. Examples include “Australian male and female” (number agreement), “men teenagers … were high as compare” (sentence construction and verb form), and “female with above 25 of their age stayed the high” (incomplete, inaccurate structure). The final sentence is also unfinished, so its grammar and meaning cannot be established. Practise building clear subject–verb sentences, checking singular and plural forms, and using accurate comparative patterns such as “the figure for women was higher than that for men.”
