Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response identifies the chart topic and reports several figures accurately, including the male and female rates for the 15–24, 25–34, 35–44 and 45–54 groups. However, the overview is substantially inaccurate: men did not exercise more overall, and women had higher rates in every group except 15–24. The claim that middle-aged people had the highest percentage is also too vague and does not identify that women aged 45–54 recorded the peak. Most importantly, the 55–64 and 65-and-over groups are omitted, so the main age pattern is incomplete. To improve, give a precise overview of the gender crossover and key highs and lows, then cover all age groups with relevant comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview and paragraphs presenting data, and the age groups are generally discussed in sequence. Basic linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “Whereas” and “Subsequently” help connect some points. However, progression is weakened by repeated conclusions, especially the claims that men did better and later that females had a better result. “On the other side” is used more than once and does not clearly signal the relationship between the information. The final paragraph also stops after the 45–54 group, leaving the account unfinished. Organise the details into a clear comparison of the younger groups and older groups, and use linking words only where they express a precise relationship.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the chart’s subject and basic comparisons, using terms such as “percentage,” “age group,” “highest” and “whereas.” However, the range is limited and several expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, including “good percentage,” “had a better number of percentage” and “adult mens.” Spelling errors such as “activites,” “peope” and “femlaes” are noticeable and reduce the accuracy of the report. Use standard chart language and vary the wording for rates and comparisons; for example, describe a figure as a “proportion” or say that one group’s rate “exceeded” another’s. Check spelling and avoid informal or vague evaluations such as “good number.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response uses mostly simple sentence patterns, with some attempts to combine ideas through clauses, as in “That means females had a highest number in this age group.” These attempts show some range, but errors are frequent enough to make parts of the writing awkward. Examples include “in year of 2010,” missing articles in “had a percentage,” and the sentence fragment beginning “Whereas female had a 48.9%.” There are also problems with plural forms and agreement in phrases such as “adult mens had more percentage.” Improve control of articles, singular and plural forms, and complete sentence construction. A useful revision strategy is to combine each pair of figures in one accurate sentence, then check that every clause has a subject and verb.
