IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The bar chart illustrates the percentage of Australian polpulation gender wise who took part in regular physcial activity in year 2010.

Overall, it can be seen that, in majority cases, more woman were involved in physcial exercise than man among the age groups. Among the males, the younger group (15 to 24) showed the highest tendency for physical exericse, 52.8%. Where among the female population, the maximum number of woman with outdoor activities (53.3%) was found in the age group 45 to 54.

The first age group showed an exception to the usual trend as the male popluation showed more interested in physical activites than the female population. But moving forward, the statistics showed that women were more keen to physcial activites comparing to men. The percentage increased from 47.7% (15 to 24) to 53.3% (45 to 54) in the case of woman. In the older population for woman, the interest declined to 47.1%.

On the other hand, the amount of male population in physical activites decreased from 52.8% to 39.5% at the age group of 35 to 44. But from the age group 45 to 54, the interest in physical activites seemed to increase as a gradual rise can be seen reaching up to 46.7% in the older most group for men.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main overall pattern: women recorded higher participation in most age groups, while men led among 15–24-year-olds. You also correctly report the male peak at 52.8%, the female peak at 53.3%, and the broad rise and fall in women’s figures and decline-then-recovery pattern for men. This covers the task’s key features. However, some comparisons are not fully developed: for example, you do not clearly compare the two sexes across the middle and older groups, and “in majority cases” is a broad summary without specifying that women were higher in five of the six groups. Also, describing women’s activity as “outdoor activities” is unsupported by the chart. More precise comparisons would make the overview and details more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and separate discussion of female and male trends. This makes the information easy to follow, and phrases such as “On the other hand” help signal a shift between the two series. Some linking is mechanical or imprecise, however. “Where among the female population” is an awkward transition, while “But moving forward” does not clearly describe the age-group comparison. The overview and body also repeat the highest figures rather than using the body to develop additional comparisons. Improve progression by grouping the data around the main contrast—men’s lead in the youngest group versus women’s lead in the remaining groups—and use clear references to age groups and values.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant task vocabulary, including “percentage,” “age group,” “declined,” “gradual rise,” and “statistics,” so the reader can understand the main trends. However, the range and control are limited by repeated use of “physical activities,” “population,” and “interest,” and several expressions are unnatural or inaccurate for describing a chart. For example, “more keen to physical activities” and “showed more interested” do not collocate naturally, while “outdoor activities” adds a meaning not shown in the data. Spelling errors such as “polpulation,” “physcial,” and “exericse” are noticeable. Use precise reporting language such as “participation rate,” “was higher than,” and “reached a peak,” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses beginning “as” and “as a gradual rise can be seen,” and the main trends remain understandable. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly with articles, agreement, and sentence construction. For example, “in majority cases” needs an article, and “more woman … than man” requires plural forms and a clearer comparison. “The younger group … showed the highest tendency …, 52.8%” is not smoothly constructed; a clause such as “the rate was highest among men aged 15 to 24, at 52.8%” would be clearer. The sentence beginning “Where among the female population” is also incomplete as written. Aim for accurate comparative structures and vary sentence forms while checking agreement and articles.
