Student answer (Band 5.0)
The bar chart illustrates the porportion of Australian males and females of various age categories that pertook in frequent physical excercise in year 2010.The percentage used was from 0% to 60%, and the age groups were from 15-20 years to over 65years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the chart’s subject and include several relevant figures, such as 52.8% for men aged 15–24 and the similar rates for people aged 65 and over. However, the summary only partially reports the main features, and some comparisons are inaccurate or unclear. The chart shows men’s rate falling to 39.5% at ages 35–44 before rising, not a steady decline; women’s rate generally rises to age 45–54, then falls, rather than increasing steadily until the oldest group. The statement that women’s participation falls to 39.5% confuses the male figure, and the age range is incorrectly given as 15–20 in the introduction. A clearer overview and accurate reporting of both series’ peaks, lows and trends would make the response more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has an introduction, an overview and separate paragraphs for male and female data, so there is some organisation. However, the progression is difficult to follow because ideas are repeated or left incomplete. For example, the overview says men’s participation declines, while the next paragraph says it “fluctuated,” without clearly explaining the fall and subsequent rise. The final paragraph ends with an unfinished comparison, and “therefore perform less activities” is not clearly connected to the preceding point. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “To begin with” and “On the other hand” are attempted, but some are awkwardly placed or do not clarify the relationship between ideas. Grouping the data by trend and using complete, clearly connected sentences would improve cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “percentage,” “age group,” “downward trend” and “similar involvement,” and you attempt alternatives such as “males” and “females.” However, the range and control are limited by repeated wording and noticeable spelling and collocation errors. Examples include “porportion,” “pertook,” “excercise,” “fluntuated” and “steadly.” Phrases such as “participating in phal activities” and “perform less activities” are unclear or unnatural, which sometimes makes the intended meaning difficult to understand. Aim for accurate, conventional chart language rather than forcing synonyms: “the proportion who exercised regularly” is clearer than “pertook in frequent physical exercise.” Proofreading spelling and word forms would also strengthen clarity.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “although” and “while,” but complex structures are often faulty and errors occur frequently. The overview contains a run-on construction: “Overall, from the bar chart, men …, although, it experienced…,” with unclear reference and punctuation. There are also incomplete or poorly joined sentences, such as “therefore perform less activities,” and inconsistent verb forms in “women … participate” and “it experiences.” Missing spaces after full stops and commas, as in “2010.The” and “year, although,” further affect readability. Work on writing one complete sentence for each comparison, maintaining consistent past-tense reporting, and checking subject–verb agreement and punctuation.
