Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response identifies the chart’s subject and includes several relevant comparisons, such as women’s figures of 53.3% and 53% in the 45–54 and 55–64 groups, and the male figure of 52.8% among 15–24-year-olds. However, the overview is inaccurate: women did not have the highest rate in every age group, since young men exceeded young women. The claim that men had the lowest figure in the “major age group” is unclear, and the response does not clearly summarise the overall pattern: women were more active in most groups, while men’s rate fell and then rose with age. There is also a confusing comparison in the 35–44 sentence. Select the main trends accurately and state them clearly before giving supporting figures.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs covering age groups. This gives the reader some organisation, and phrases such as “In addition” and “By contrast” attempt to connect comparisons. However, progression is weakened by the unclear overview and by grouping figures without a consistent pattern. The sentence beginning “At first glance” moves from the 35–44 group to 25–34 and then 15–24, making the comparison harder to follow; the next paragraph then returns to older groups. Some linking phrases are mechanical or inaccurately punctuated, including “shifiting attention towards remaining data” and “by contrast , .age group”. Organise the data in a consistent order and use simpler, precise transitions to make relationships clear.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses some task-relevant vocabulary, including “percentage,” “age group,” “recorded,” and “physical activity,” so the topic is generally understandable. It also attempts more formal reporting language, for example “At first glance” and “shifting attention.” However, the range is limited and several choices are unnatural or imprecise: “recorded highest figure” and “women recorded at 39.5 percent” do not clearly express the data, while “doing physical exercise” varies from the chart’s wording without adding precision. Spelling errors such as “ghraph” and “shifiting,” along with “amd,” are noticeable. Build a more accurate set of chart-reporting collocations, such as “stood at,” “was higher than,” and “reached a peak,” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

There are attempts to form longer comparative sentences, and the reader can understand many individual figures. However, sentence structures are often faulty, which sometimes makes the relationships between figures unclear. For example, “women recorded at 39.5 percent whereas women in age group 25 to 34 was at 48.9 percent than men was at 42.2 percent” has problems with clause construction and subject–verb agreement. The opening also lacks a complete, well-formed sentence ending, and several sentences omit articles or use them inconsistently, as in “in age group 35 to 44.” Punctuation and spacing around commas and full stops are also inconsistent. Practise writing one clear comparison per sentence, checking agreement and articles, then combine ideas only when the grammar remains controlled.
