IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The bar chart illusrates the proportion of Australian men and women in different age groups who performed regular physical activity in the year 2010.
Overall, if we combine and average the percentage of regular physical activity in all age groups, it will come out to be around 50%. Moreover, if we exclude the 15-24 age group, we can see that in all other age groups, compared to males, females have a higher proportion of regular physical activity.
Men have the highest regular physical activity percentage in the 15 to 24 age group which is 52.8%. The rate dips and reaches 42.2% when they are in the 25 to 34 age group and it reaches its lowest point of 39.5% in 35% when they are between 35 and 44. Then it starts to increase steadily and reaches 46.7% as they reach the age of 65.
At 15 to 24 age group, women have physical activity proportion of 47.7%. It increases gradually across the age groups and reaches a peak of 53.3% in when their age is between 45 and 54. Then it starts to decrease and reaches its lowest rate of 47.1 when they are 65 and over.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main comparison accurately: women have higher activity rates in every age group except 15–24, and you report several key figures correctly. The overview also notes the broad level of participation. This meets the task well, but the overview could be more informative by highlighting the contrasting patterns: men fall to a low at ages 35–44 before rising, while women peak at 45–54 and then decline. There is also a factual/clarity problem in “reaches its lowest point of 39.5% in 35%”: the figure is 39.5% for ages 35–44, not “35%.” The claim that the combined average is around 50% is less useful and not clearly supported as a main feature. More precise selection and explanation of the trends would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised into a clear introduction, overview, and separate paragraphs for men and women. This gives the reader a logical route through the information, and sequencing phrases such as “Then” and “Moreover” help show comparisons and changes over time. The progression within each gender paragraph is generally easy to follow. However, some linking is repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “Then it starts to,” and the overview’s average statement interrupts the more important comparison between the sexes. A few phrases also make the progression less smooth, such as “in 35%” and “in when their age is.” Grouping the contrasting male and female trends more directly, while varying transitions, would make cohesion more flexible and polished.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “percentage,” “dips,” “lowest point,” “peak,” and “increase steadily.” These choices help describe the chart’s movements, and the meaning is generally clear. However, some wording is repetitive or imprecise: “regular physical activity percentage” and “physical activity proportion” are awkward, while “it reaches its lowest point of 39.5% in 35%” contains an unclear expression. “Illusrates” is also misspelled, and “in when” is an unsuitable phrase. Aim for natural collocations such as “the proportion of men who exercised” and “fell to a low of,” and check spelling carefully. Greater precision and variety in describing rates and trends would improve lexical control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the conditional structure “if we exclude the 15-24 age group” and clauses describing changes across age groups. Most sentences communicate the intended comparisons, and errors rarely prevent understanding. Some grammatical problems remain, however. “At 15 to 24 age group” needs an article and a more natural preposition, while “reaches its lowest point of 39.5% in 35%” has a faulty construction. The phrase “reaches a peak of 53.3% in when their age is between 45 and 54” combines incompatible structures; use “peaks at 53.3% among women aged 45–54.” There is also a missing percent sign after “47.1.” Editing these patterns would improve accuracy.
